Was wondering if any of us locals had tried this.

True/False? Possible?

I'll try it soon, when i have time. If it works, it will save us $90... :p

its possible just by the connectors connected, dont have to solder as well... Below $10 can get all the parts from sim lim tower liao. The diagram above can be simplified some more actually, with phone plug and rca connectors meant for diy.

But the issue on hand not so much of connection, but impedance mismatch, which already have many discussions in other forums. With the diy thingy, its just like connecting geetar straight to the laptop/computer soundcard input, which can get the job done, but no proper impedance matching, analog to digital conversion(geetar signal to program and processed signal from program back to analog signal for monitoring). The end result could be either the geetar signal is too weak and having to increase volume and having more significant hiss issue.

Theres some sites which also mentioned bout matching impedance with additional components in the path. I cant remember the site now, but do have a look over at google searching with "irig impedance mismatch, impedance matching for diy irig" etc.

Cool. Yep, read about the impedance mismatch thingy in other forums. But, as long as it works, we can still have fun with the free Amplitude app, and perhaps also the free Peavey Ampkit app. :)

I tested, and verified, it's working. ;)
Despite the impedence thingy, it's a matter of how you tweak the input/output on the app.
Of course, here, i'm not trying to demote the iRig or Ampkit hardware.
You still need them to get the best results from the apps.
So, to just test out the apps without having to buy the actual hardware, you only need:

3.5mm Plug to 3 RCA AV Video Audio Cable

In my case, i already own such a cable from my DV camcorder's accessories.
The color indication below applies to my case, as in the cable i own.
But it's not difficult to trace the signals, there're only 3,
(1) to guitar
(2) to stereo left
(3) to stereo right

Red -> *converter -> guitar

*RCA Female To 1/4-inch Male Connector

White + Yellow -> **converter -> headphones/speakers
(i don't really care which is left, which is right, as long as i get the stereo sound)

**2 x RCA Female / 1 x 3.5mm Stereo Female Adapter

Output to your headphones/speaker, and it done.
Of course, like i said, you need to adjust the apps' input/output/feedback control, etc, to get the best sound.

Enjoy! :D

I tried it a mth ago.Amp got sound but no sound effect.I tried all that is possible,

btw, i'm using it on my ipad, the sound effects, tuner, everything works just fine.

Alias, if there's sound from your amp, that means it worked.
Did you engage the pedal(s) or up the knobs? You should hear the effects, i did.
For Amplitude, do register, to get a distortion pedal free.

Btw, output to headphones/speakers, it's better, for the stereo sound.

just remember one thing which some might have missed out on trying to diy the thing is that for it to work, the end of the cable with the earphone/headphone jack(plug into iphone/ipad) will need to have 3 black rings.

For our usual eaphone/headphone, theres only 2 black rings which carry the left and right signal. For guitar cable, theres only one black ring, which carry the mono guitar signal.

The reason for needing the 3 black rings is that out of the 3 black rings, 1 will be connected to send the guitar signal(in mono), into the device for processing and 2 of the black rings will be connected to left and right return signal to earphone(for monitoring).

The 3 black rings phone plug is the same as handphone earpiece, where the mic that we talk into, is send a mono signal into the phone and the earphone is receiving the voice from the other party on the phone.

anyway, i have left out the ground connection for the above, just to make things simpler.

Thanks Path :)

Really enjoying this diyRig + ipad setup. Great for late-night practices.

I may just buy some nice components from SimLim Tower, to build a more iRig-like dongle.

hi,
to those who have successfully did this, can share where you buy the cable? searched afew stores in sim lim sq, can't find anything

it's sim lim tower. NOT sim lim sq. And yeah. tried it a few months ago... It works near perfectly, albeit a bit unsightly with the length of cable + connectors here, there, everywhere... not really portable... but it saves me the $ for easy jamming at home...

Hi, thanks. Went there ytd aft work to grab everything. Ard $16

Anyway, I dnt seem to have any sound coming from my bass.

Do I need to run the software in order to have sound?

Was just trying out to play along with a YouTube video, can hear the video's audio but not my bass

anyone tried plugging in an active bass thru this setup? i have this funny sound coming out, sounds like a heartbeat and it's beating at a constant pace too
