it's like this sir:
-active units are quite a one-trick pony, if you aim to raise hell, it's an excellent option. other than that, it's quite at a lost (think: restraint drive/ blues crunch/ cleans...) because the non-active options are excellent & preferred in this domain
-the passive pickups clean up up better if you lower the guitar volume. IMO this gives the player another palette of tones to work with in addition to the pedals/ amps the player utilizes. the active counterpart is quite adverse in this light because it works on a pre-amp basis where the pickup is being pushed to give more (output) when what the player really needs, at times, is less.
is one better than the other? nope- it's what you need that counts.
