hey guys, i have a question..

Wad's the main difference between those normal or
modern humbuckers and vintage humbuckers? how
do they actually sound like?

For single coils i know how to tell, but for humbuckers,
somehow i am still new and finding out more, anyone
care to enlighten me more?

Thanks Guys!

what's the tonal difference? well, you have to actually hear them in person to tell the diff. some people find it negligible, others appreciate the frequency incinations relative to the humbucker's default incarnation.

if you can tell the diff between vintage-modern single coils, it isn't too different with humbuckers.

Yes, its an intricate difference, which you can make out by hearing records of the past and now :)

@suckasucks:

Not all vintage pups are low output, in fact, the demand for higher output pups was higher in those days, to naturally overdrive their amps, for pedals were not too popular.

if you are referring to the original PAF- it is a vintage type pickup. if you are referring to the Dimarzio PAF model- yes, it's voiced to be such but it's the manufacturer's interpretation of the original unit.

'fat' depends on the pickups inherent EQ, vintage or otherwise.

haha..wanna hear a vintage humbucker and a modern 1...try my greco with it's 25yrs old humbuckers..then u try a modern new humbucker..you'll be able to hear it

well, vintage pups tend to be lower output than modern ones (not comparing those modern ones made to sound like vintage ones)
it has a slightly brighter tone with some warmth in it.
PAF is a vintage sounding pup. So are pups like dimarzio's virtual paf, paf, etc..

type of magnets used are also a key factor. mostly back then Alnico 2 and 3s were more popular. these gave more midrange and weaker treble and bass responses while most modern pups now use A5 and Ceramics

of course there are also magnets like A4 and A8 which are seldom used by mainstream pup makers

to really understand how different they sound, u probably gotta hear them
but if charts help u as well, check out the dimarzio website for their tone charts, compare each of the pups and u will roughly see the general attributes of the pups.

as for seymour duncan pups, u can check out this link.
