Hi guys !
I'm really into country music which has strong acoustic roots, unlike Simon Cowell of course, who totally hates it. :D Hope to see some fellow softies who are into this genre as well. Didnt see any post about country music here in soft (mostly metal & rock). Post some of your favourite country artists and songs here !

My favourite artists are Sheryl Crow & Cheyenne Kimball & Rascal Flatts.

And I love most of their songs like Soak Up the Sun, If It Makes You Happy, My Wish, The Day Has Come, Four Walls. :D

Cosmic American Music!

Am digging these bands now - Fleet Foxies, Band of Horses, Bon Iver, Grand Archives, Okeverill River, Shearwater, Mountain Goats, New Frontiers etc

Don't get me started

:)

The Mountain Goats are great. 'Get Lonely' is my favorite album of theirs. Also Bright Eyes and Paul Simon's newer stuff deserve a mention.

The Goats new one isn't too shabby either... San Bernardino, Heretic Pride... good stuff but Fleet Foxes' debut album is awesome

I do enjoy playing & singing country music. Old school and new school ...

I wasnt a big fan when I was growing up but i still listened to the likes of John Denver and Glen Campbell. Much later I actually sessioned with a country band (for a series of gigs streching over the entire Xmas period) and started learning more.

In 1995 my band SHADES (at the gung ho-ness of my keyboardist) auditioned for a country gig slot at a local hotel (Bro Tetra will know this story) and despite the fact some of SG's top country bands auditioned for it, we actually got the gig (much to my amazement) and played there 6 nights a week for 9 months! Of course we had to increase and improve our repertiore so we went on from there.

The last country band I played in was for the Mavericks led by old timer Don Nonis and featured Mathew & the Mandarin's Drummer Pat favacho & Stefi Nonis. Don owned a country bar called "Winchester 57" at Clarke Quay and I played PURE country (including covering pedal steel work courtesy of my Boss ME 30) 6 nights a week! At this point I had to learn ALL the coutry classic hits NOTE FOR FREAKIN NOTE - some of which were really killer (e.g Devil went down to Georgia fiddle parts on guitar). It was fun though and some nights got rowdy especially when the US fleet came to town.

My last country slot was a 2 pc thingy around 2 years back - also backing up Don Nonis in a local tavern, twice a week.

Another reason I like country music is because you can apply alot of the guitar styles to other forms of music. My main guitar hero Steve Morse has a very "chicken pickin" background too and it comes across in alot of his licks.

Yeah .. I confess, I have a soft spot for country music.

yeeee hah ...

i'm much more into modern Country-Pop and Country-Rock.
as i'm young they're more appealing to me.
but i like Bob Dylan !
country music makes me more relaxed and laid back.

and Rascal Flatts is an amazing country band.
i really love their songs.
not sure if there're any of their fans here. :)

Have been trying to infuse my live sets with the country-folk vibe and even covered The Flying Buritto Bros' Hot Buritto #1 at Rock the Sub. Tried to get the band to play the Louvin Bros' classic Christian Life but they kinda chickened out.. heh!

Maybe next time...

BTW any good local pedal or lap steel players out there?

BTW any good local pedal or lap steel players out there?

1. Leonard Rezel - currently playing / owning Chevy 57 at Katong Village.

2. Michale Png - Mathew & the Mandarins.

3. The dude whom I replaced in The mavericks ... (cant remember his name)

4. fgl "simulated" pedal steel ;)

Zomg! I had no idea anyone on SOFT was into country. A lot of my musical heroes came from a folk/country tradition: Dylan, Cash, The Carter Family, Springsteen etc. Is anyone here my age? I'm 18 this year. :S

I don't really like the turn country is taking nowadays, anyone seen that chick Taylor Swift? Looks like another blond bimbo to me. :/. There's an excellent country-tinged Southern rock band called Kings of Leon though, any fans?

Country ROCKS!

Wow..I'm so glad I found this thread.... I don't know of many people who listen to country music here in Singapore. I'm into the more contemporary country as well as country rock. Faves include The Eagles (How can I NOT include them???), Rascal Flatts, Emerson Drive (took me a while but I finally found their CD at HMV) and folks like Fleetwood Mac (I consider them country rock) and their successors -Little Big Town. Brad Paisley's 5th Gear CD has got some excellent well-written songs and great guitar playing too! (anyone wanna be checked for ticks? HEH HEH). And of course, one of the finest guitarists around - Mr Nicole Kidman (aka Keith Urban) - If you're into the finger-picking style of Doyle Dykes, you can give a listen to an early keith urban and the range track called Clutterbilly.

Anyone wanna start a country/country-rock band and need a bassist or sometimes vocalist? PM me...

Don't get me started on Southern Rock - just bought .38 Special's hits CD... AAAAHHHHHHHHH!
