chinese and malay instrument racism?

Hi! Recently, i decided to buy a new guitar. I was trying to decide between an ibanez 'shred-type guitar' or a more traditional gibson les paul. Since i like listening to shredders like paul gilbert, satriani, vai etc. i decided to buy an ibanez guitar as all of the 3 i mentioned have ibanez signature models. After reading many reviews i also read that ibanez guitars are quite good quality for the price. However, after talking to some friends about my desire to buy an ibanez, most of them said that i shouldn't buy an ibanez because it is a 'malay' guitar and i should buy a 'chinese' guitar like a gibson les paul instead (im chinese).

what pissed me off was that they told me not to buy an ibanez not because of any technical or musical reasons (e.g. workmanship, sound quality, etc.), but purely because (they perceive that) many malays use ibanez guitars, and since i'm not malay, i shouldn't be using an ibanez guitar. Has anyone else encounted this 'instrument racism' before? Aren't we all united by music? does it really matter what guitars we use or what race we are? I would like everyone's insight on this.

oh, and by the way, i bought the ibanez.

Please la brudder, Ibanez Jap lor, most ppl play Jrock using Ibanez in Singapore. and 99% them chinese.

i using a Washburn and soon a Dean.

so what does that make me.

whats with your friend anyways?
i think they are damaged.

its all a matter of preference. no racism here. I'm a chinese dude and my ibanez s470 was my primary axe choice (influenced by mr chinese shredder Herman Li himself) before i switched over to my current Fender Strat. My bandmate is Malay and he prefers sgs and lespauls. against the norm? I doubt so man :D

This is how it starts though:
The guitar discriminators of today may just be the jailed blog racists of tomorrow, if these feeling and mindsets are not erradicated.

Actually, I just realised something about what your friends said... Nevermind about music uniting races and all that.

What's wrong with being Malay or liking Ibanez? Why the distinction in the first place?

Methinks you should stay away from these friends...:???:

thats total bullshit, I'm chinese and i'd never touch a gibson, their waaay too traditional, even their supposedly pointy guitars have rounded. edges.

eh i jsut realised rork is back..

but seriously if brands is determined by skin color,
why shouldnt they just put a race as a brand?

Was RoRK GONE?
This is just funny, so it's only justifiable to have a gibson and a ibanez if you're of mixed heritage?

I'm of mixed heritage, Bugis/Minangkabau/Acehnese/Sundanese/Madurese/Riauese/Siamese/Khmer/Human/Elf...and I play ESP/LTD basses... therefore ESP is a multi-racial guitar brand that does not discriminate any full-blooded, mixed-blooded, half-blooded, warm-blooded or cold-blooded ethnicity/race!

So go and purchase an ESP/LTD now for a truly democratic musical environment!

(By the way, Davis Guitar did not ask me to put in a good word about ESP/LTD stuff)
