chinese and malay instrument racism?

Hi! Recently, i decided to buy a new guitar. I was trying to decide between an ibanez 'shred-type guitar' or a more traditional gibson les paul. Since i like listening to shredders like paul gilbert, satriani, vai etc. i decided to buy an ibanez guitar as all of the 3 i mentioned have ibanez signature models. After reading many reviews i also read that ibanez guitars are quite good quality for the price. However, after talking to some friends about my desire to buy an ibanez, most of them said that i shouldn't buy an ibanez because it is a 'malay' guitar and i should buy a 'chinese' guitar like a gibson les paul instead (im chinese).

what pissed me off was that they told me not to buy an ibanez not because of any technical or musical reasons (e.g. workmanship, sound quality, etc.), but purely because (they perceive that) many malays use ibanez guitars, and since i'm not malay, i shouldn't be using an ibanez guitar. Has anyone else encounted this 'instrument racism' before? Aren't we all united by music? does it really matter what guitars we use or what race we are? I would like everyone's insight on this.

oh, and by the way, i bought the ibanez.

Lol, i find it both funny and stupid. I'm malay btw and i own an ibanez myself. Haha. There is some truth in that, at least from my experience, most of my chinese friends prefer the gibson les paul (I dunno why). I've got a chinese friend who uses an Ibanez though, and he's good.

As for your question, I've never encountered any racism in music thus far. I strongly believe music is a universal language, race isn't an issue. I bought my Ibanez coz of the feel, not coz of my race.

great move in buying the Ibanez!

i'm using an Ibanez bass (not sure if the "instrument racism" applies to bass or not) and i'm chinese.

Tell your friends to fly kite!!! Buy what you feel is best for you. Im chinese & i dont like les paul. Maybe youir friends are well-off, so they can acquire les pauls.

What has race got to do with instrument choice? As long as it sounds good to u, go for it :)

I`m not an Ibanez fan though but I owned their Artcore archtops before :)

like this, better stick to:
malays = gambus (brand is Gibanez)
chinese = pipa (brand is Pibson)
indian = sitar (brand is Sender)

old skool mat rock here and i love Les Pauls..weird to associate instruments with creed and color

i adore Les Pauls coz Jimmy Page and Gary Moore are LP users..hehehe am a big fan

it just so happens that your friends are extremely shallow and attach stereotypes easily.. even when it comes to guitars.

if you ask me, such people are nice to toy around with, suan and jack till the cows come home.. doing such things = very gratifying to me.

start by telling them, "oh i didn't know that Gilbert, Satriani and Vai were Malays".

utter bollocks la your friends. what in the world were they collecting when God was giving out the brains? tsk.

I M chines with 3 ibanez

first guitar was a ibanez roadstar 2 - more then 20 year old guitar

2nd ibanez RG -

3rd was a S540 LTD

ahhahaha ur friends are hilarious.

does that mean pg , satch , vai , andy timmons all are playing with 'malay' guitar?

your friends were probably horsing around.. weren't they? i can't imagine someone saying that seriously. i myself would never own an ibanez mostly cause i hate the way the rgs look. perhaps i would buy the artcore models cause they look nice, but why buy ibanez when there's gretsch and gibson? haha. it's a matter of preference, but honestly, race could in a way determine your preference. like how malays like listening to hard rock/metal and all that shredding guitar virtuosos kinda thing hance the ibanez tag. i still think you guys are getting a little too worked up, people get too worked up whenever race or God comes into the picture

Tsk... Where they got that info from?

Truth is: Malays don't play Ibanez or Gibsons. They play cheap acoustics because they can't afford electricity, much less an electric guitar.

Proof: We still pound our chillies the traditional way and becos of that we make kick ass sambal belacan!

Hah!

Huh? My nick is White Strat... Does this mean I'm supposed to be white? Nah... That's all bullshit man...

That's like saying Eric Clapton and SRV shouldn't be playing the blues because they're not black.
