Nearly 53,000 Chinese children sickened by milk powder: govt

AFP - 1 hour 30 minutes ago BEIJING, (AFP) - - Nearly 53,000 children in China have been sickened by milk powder contaminated by an industrial chemical, the government said Monday, dramatically ramping up its previous figures.

A total of 52,857 children had been brought to hospitals after falling ill, an official in the health ministry spokesman's office told AFP.
Most had received outpatient care and had "basically recovered" but 12,892 remained hospitalised, added the official, who declined to be named.
The ministry added that 104 of those babies were in serious condition after consuming dairy products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine.
China had previously given a figure of 6,244 sickened.
Eighty-two percent of the nearly 53,000 affected babies were under the age of two, a health ministry statement said.
Melamine, which is normally used in making plastics, was first found in infant formula in Chinese markets but has since been detected in a wide range of products with dairy ingredients both in China and abroad.
The scandal stems from the practice of adding melamine to watered-down milk to give it the appearance of higher protein levels.
The discovery has led to mass product recalls both in China and in several other countries that had imported the tainted goods.
The Chinese government also has announced tighter quality inspections across the dairy sector

China is always such an interesting character. On one hand, I have massive respect and admiration for its people, and on the other, it manages to utterly disgust me sometimes.

Mind you Singapore's affected as well. Just saw an sms in a friends' phone warning him against certain Dairy products like M&M's and oreo wafers which have been recalled in stores all around SG, and not to eat them (:

darn... even my fav white rabbit sweets are toxic. i ate a trmendous amount if these when i was younger. so if i go berserk & start stabbing people, the SOFT community will know why...

hm.. i just had a thought.
in a few years, China will rise, right?
and now the current most powerful country is America.
what are the odds of this striking China?
what if.. somebody planned all this and sabotaged the milk powder?
trying to prevent China's rise?

but then again, it's just a thought.

hope the kids recover real soon.

actually this is not the first 'added-ingredient' case happening in china.
there's cases like adding metal powder to increase the weight of chinese medicine, so they can earn more by selling less medicine.
buying cheap dead chickens from farm to cook in restaurant.

i think they dont really care as long as they can earn money.
just that the previous cases did not cause muchie panic as the consumer were adults and there's no death, or no one care if an adult die of food poisoning (adult have higher resistance, or need more dosage to kill).

now it's babies that's dying, that's why hell breaks free :)

it's about ethics, really. the people there can't even respect intellectual property, would they be meticulous with food ingredients? i recall reading an article of how a pau seller added human thigh meat into his products to raise the level of tastiness to move quantities, of course. the consolation being, it's sourced from the local morgues...,

It is so incredibly short sighted though. In the long run there will be less profit. Did they really think no one would notice?

if there's no baby die or sick from their protein enhanced milk powder, no one will even checked on them :)

Certainly not the first added-ingredient case in China, as mentioned above. But certainly the most serious one as I can recall.

The funniest one was char siew bao fillings made of cardboard. That cracked me up.

And this sucks, 'cos everything's MIC nowadays.

=Guitarsan

Uranium, to increase the green glowing effect/glossiness. lol

China has been notorious for such things, yet people still go to them due to their cheap prices. Lets us know how much the other companies care about their consumers. In the business world, Profits > People

dont have to be guitar, it already did happen. There was another case which caused major upset bout 2 years ago

The paint which was used for some MIC toys contained toxic substance and those toys were distributed all over the world, europe to asia etc. Some kids that came into contact with those toys were hospitalised then.

its actually kinda sad when theres honest bizman trying to raise the standard of MIC products theres also much more people in it for the quick buck, causing more damages

Come on. It's China we're talking about. What can you expect? They always, ALWAYS have something going on there. If it's not this type of food poisoning, it's mostly quality goods (Unless you're talking about those big brands like Sony .etc), selling lots of pirated games and movies, selling you fake goods, contaminated blood in hospitals, and so much more.

I bought a PSP there for the price of one in SG, but when I finally check back in SG, wtf? The thing was a fake. The battery lasted 30 mins only, the battery compartment was out of place, lousy colour quality, and the worst part... THE UMD DRIVE WAS BROKEN.

Even if nothing's going on there, there's the SARS incident where 3 Chinese came over and passed it around, the recent murder involving 4 Chinese ... I'm really not surprised by this food poisoning thing...

But on a side note, they are quite decent people, have good manners, and have quite an interesting history. But still, I wouldn't trust all the stuff sold on the streets of China. You never know what they're up to.

these days, china is known for its lack of transparency. the milk case was actually unearthed in march this year, but they kept it quiet.

i think if you put a list of what china has screwed up and kept quiet, it'll be longer than a christmas wish-list. like the white rabbit candy (i miss em already and i'm dying for it!), MIC mattel toys laden with lead (the one PatheinRaindropMoe refered to), fake PSPs, copycat cars (ie Geely), Tianenment square incident, blah blah blah... even the 'pretty' Olympic girl lipsync'd to a supposed 'ugly' singer....

i think if they were too transparent, they wouldnt be the 'rising Asian powerhouse' they are now.

I think the saddest thing is the babies suffering. Really "black hearted"... Maximising profits at the expense of little lives. Tragic...
