Hi all,

I'm planning on DIYing a cavity shield on some of my guitars. I've been looking around for the materials needed and i think the main ingredient would be the copper/aluminum adhesive shielding tape. I googled some sites and managed to find this.

Yeah it's kinda pricey. Anyone else knows of anywhere else i can get these locally and NOT order online?

Please share your success stories with me.

Cheers!
:)

hi junkie... ive ever seen someone using aluminum foil for shielding... u can get aluminum foil easily nowadays ... cheap .. and a glue ...
so u can cover all the cavity wall using aluminum foil and with a glue help of course :-D

You can also use adhesive spray to apply in your cavity. I have been wanting to shield my guitar but I don't understand how to for the wiring and all.

I went around the jalan besar area this morning to try to hunt for copper tape at quite a few hardware stores.

Zero Found...

junkiemanxl: Thanks for the video link!. I have watched a couple of videos and read a few articles about shielding. The part I don't get is about the soldering of the wires.

In the video you gave, which part of the pot did he solder the cable to & which part of the pickup did he solder the cable pickguard to?. I'm confused about that.

I might be wrong but i think u just solder it on to the back of the pot. The other end leads to the pickup cavity. It's just to ground. (anyone correct me if i'm wrong) :)

Another question about materials,
Anyone knows which kind of wires to use for grounding?
normal copper wires? Some measurements and specs would be good.

^ Thanks man. I'll have to try it to know. :)

Yes, you can use normal copper wires. Single strand or multi strand. Multi strand is easier to bend. You can get it at Sim Lim Tower.

theres a type of silver colour adhesive tape which can be gotten from homefix that can do the shielding job as well.

It look like aluminium foil on outside, with adhesive behind which can be pasted all over within the cavity. This kinda tape is conductible and having continuity even thru the adhesive part(tested with multimeter).

It can be seen used with aircon repair as well.

Anyway, this kinda tape is a cheap alternative to the more proper shielding paint and copper tape. It works for shielding, but if anyone is particular bout using the right thing for the purpose, then the shielding paint and copper tape still the way to go.

I just got my guitar shielded at Standard Value for $40. Was thinking of doing it myself, but all the trouble involved in getting adhesive aluminium tape and being stuck with the rest of the roll made me decide against it.
