Bus/ MRT fares rising....

i'm wondering how many of us here are perturbed by the rising bus/ MRT fares.

because public transportation companies are not government run, profit-cost issues are inevitable but the public suffers... unlike them, we cannot aplly to our employers/ parents to increase our wages/ allowances respectively, at will.

is being a communist state the only way to ensure these companies continue to provide consideration for the masses?

I'm definitely going to be affected. Being a poly student, I spent about an average of $80 per month on transport fares.

i think we can expect newspapers and TV news to cover this somewhat extensively. I bet you one of the top ppl will say things like raise 2 cents is better than raising 5 cents, or there is no reason not to raise, etc... u noe things that confuse the masses.

I dun understand why they can't absorb some of the cost.. its a freaking monopoly, u earn $5 million this year, not as if next year got new competitor drive u out of business. If they die die wanna raise we also LL, singapore may be small but we still need to take bus... esp to jam or gigs

essential services should be run by non-profit organisations. Especially when there is hardly any real competition in the market.

haha i got an idea... with advanced digital modeling systems like Line 6... can we design a wallet that gives off the EZ link BEEP sound so that when we press our wallets on the reader there is the BEEP sound? i think long term its much cheaper than actually paying haha

yeah what to do. cloudsky why dont u use concession?

they say 2 cents is little. but nooo its alott
i wonder why ite students' fares are like lower than us poly students.

yeahh
dont say singapore is small, even within the same neighbourhood also take bus

light & water bills, taxi fares, bus/mrt fares and ....wait for it ...CIGARETTE PRICES ...coming soon..... :x

This song was written in 1993. 13 years later even SBS or MRT is not the only way it's gonna be.

Download it here. http://www.bigomagazine.com/features/highcost.html

THE HIGH COST OF LIVING
Watchmen

People complain that things have got too dear
People grumble cos no one wants to hear
At the coffee shop, it's the same old talk
Prices going up and it's everybody's else's fault
Now it's so hard to buy a brand new car
Unless you're a zillionaire or a TV star
COE or simply B-R-O-K-E!
SBS or MRT's the only way it's gonna be

How can we cope with the high cost of living
Why do they take when they should all be giving
The spirit is weak and the flesh sure isn't willing
How do you cope with the high cost of living

Look around you, this land of milk and honey
If you wanna get ahead, you need a whole lot of money
Courtesy or decency won't get you anywhere
It's a Faustian bargain, but you don't care

How can we cope...

From the time you're born till the moment of death
You'll be paying the dues with your every breath
It's a fact of life as real as today
The more you pay, the more you have to pay!

How can we cope...

this was the initial arguement but it was agreed that in the name of efficiency, profit considerations is an effective check.

:?

damn. everyone shud use that e-pass thingy. $27 for whole month.

but still, singapore has nuts regarding freedom of speech. i can't believe i say the word, "democracy" every morning during the pledge.

PAP - pay and pay

what do you expect?

the progressive package is a drum stick
now they are asking you back for a whole piece chicken

guess this is a repeat of events from the last price hike...

apart from the intense "public" debate, the bill was still passed.
it's not as if the raising oil prices would dwindle their profits to barely cover the big wig's bonuses haha

look at it this way..the media & mass public transport IS either controlled by the state or a monopoly..not to mention the current cabinet profile.

we'll only have to sit back and let the "decision makers" put up a good show.

someone once told me that we were a modern transformation of the ones above the 48th parallel...well, slightly better.

come to think of it..
sg is not really transparent..
freedom of speech? heh
government give money only then they shut up

we dont really have our say, do we?
