BOSS's New Impressive Pedal

To all the people who diss BOSS all the time, I believe they may have hit a gold mine with this one...

Of course... No stopping the mods, but sounds like a good pedal to start with...

The mids control could be similar to the Sansamp GT-2 and Barber Dirty Bomb... whatchacall it? Biaxial or something? Drop the treble and/or bass, midrange goes up.

Hey... don't diss Boss... they have always had gold mines before! Heh

I'm not dissing 'em! Just directing it to people who do.

gold mine? it lacks a midrange control...

I've thought about that one, and like ShredCow mentioned, it is possible to achieve scooped tones by adjusting the bass and treble up, or down for pronounced mids. They did a midrange boost using a SD-1 I believe, so might audition it with some other boosters, see how that works out.

Is it in SG yet? wanna try it out >.<

I don't think so, only one I saw for sale was on PGS.

I'm loving the sounds this pedal can offer - especially with the "sound" knob all the way to the right.

I would love to mod that section to get more tighter tones though, but it does sound alluring =)

the lowering of other frequencies to enhance the midrange is a compromise; i did this with the Metal Core (ML-2) among other pedals without a midrange control- i see it as a deprivation per se. i find it annoying not to have a definite midrange control not that i'm totally averse to it (i do own some pedals without midrange manipulation) but if the pedal is in a chain of other effects & acts as a primary distortion source especially, having it sound too scooped isn't helpful. it doesn't help when you are playing in a band context either.

digital modelling? overhyped for a pedal that few people have heard in person?

Well, we won't know until it hits our shores. But thus far I think it sure is worthy of attention, and in its price range, certainly a good contender to other pedals.

Ahhh, yes. I concede to that. I guess there is a control / eq factor that cannot be rectified with just 2 knobs. Maybe a mod to add a midrange knob to it too... I'm sure people at Keeley or Monte Allums will think of something =)

I'm thinking that you're quite right - it is a compromise because the midrange in a Baxandall EQ is effectively "fixed". When the High/Low knobs are at their maximum/minimum travel, there's no way to boost/cut for more mids anymore.

That said, the ST-2 has a stronger midrange than the ML-2 so I'm expecting the ST-2 to be more versatile.

Have you tried the Barber Dirty Bomb? It has a Baxandall EQ section and a 3-way midrange switch. That midrange switch toggles between 3 levels of mids: scooped, neutral and boosted. I find this very useful and tweakable.

You know... I'm wondering if the ST-2 is but a modded ML-2... with bumped mids! Heh. You think?

will visit the Barber, i mean- will try the Barber when i next visit Tymusic

Lol... Basic circuitry, possible, but that knobbie in the stead of the gain knob doesn't seem to work as though in a tapered gain knob. Even with it at high gain it sounds different to me though... Headroom difference? ML-2 seems to be more compressed.

I agree with you on this; and that van_halen seems to be having some issues with people who start threads.
