boosting gain

hey guys. quickie.

any recommendations on a pedal which can boost my drive without altering my tone too much?

im planning to place it in front of my ocd

the Blackstone MOSFET overdrive is great at that.

Or Subdecay's Liquid Sunshine.

No tubescreamer type would do what you ask for... TS tend to smoothen out the tone and depending on the eq, add a variable level of mids (mid hump) due to bass & treble cut.

BUT. Something that MIGHT have been similar to a TS has done a great job before - Pro Analog's Dirt Royale w/cheeze with its very interesting "Feed" knob that alters the way the pedal feels.

Fuzz Faces, the silicon variety, are nice for adding this woolly-ness to the low end - think GROWL - and just bumping up the whole gain factor... imparts a nice organic looseness. Try the MJM London Fuzz...

Wait, what's your budget?

hahah eh woah so many options!

ooh my budget is roughly 300 to 400

eh the ts would probably muddy up my tone right?

if u dont mind onboard intsllation try the emg spc or afterburne ... they are basically active tone pots that alter gain from max 6db (spc) to 20db (afterburner). Minimum retro installation and space taken up iwth serious gain boost. Best part is that they work with both active and passive pick ups.

non custom boutique options for this straightforward quest....

EH LPB1
that tiny little booster from Catalinbread but may brighten up your tone slightly
MXR Microamp
Worst to worst.... Boss GE7

A TS doesn't necessarily muddy up.

I find it actually TIGHTENS the sound up.

The traditional TS has a bass cut and treble cut. The bass cut prevents muddying up and the treble rounds off the sizzle a little. Then there's a good serving of compression. This is why strat (or single coil) players love the TS effect.

Go to TyMusic to try the Liquid Sunshine. Ebenex has the Blackstone and MJM fuzzes.

I don't if you enjoy how a Fuzz Face works with your tone but I really enjoy it and even though does change the character of your sound & feel (but less than a TS) I think its a very natural change.

Note that if you play high gain, the characteristics of the boosting pedal don't effect the original tone so much.

ooh youre talking about all variations of the ts?

haha im not really a high gain player. probably medium gain i would say

Well, traditional TS lor. E.g. TS9, TS808, etc.

Some guys have done circuits which they claim are... distant relatives of a TS but not TS. I don't know what that means. Guys that do the NOC3 Pure Drive (which I think is awesome for jazz/blues) or the Tim/Timmy.

haha... unfortunately no stock! maybe after chinese new year i dunno... anyways this is not the place for me to "sell" stuff.

For what it is worth, the LPB1 is a low cost solution to boost signals. Relatively cheap, relatively loud, relatively clean.... and if you don't like it you can easily sell it off at a relatively low damage to the wallet.

If along the way you wanna mess around with electronics, you can easily reuse the hardware and build an AMZ Mosfet booster for very little money and there you go... Hifi-ish NON-"CRACKLE OK" gain knob that boost your speakers to damnation.

Hahaha... the hifi mosfet boosters are great for turning warmer tones (e.g. humbuckers, mahogany) into a stinging, biting blues break up.
