Bond Theme Songs

THOA

New member
I'm addicted to the song "Another Way to Die" by Jack White and Alicia Keys, and it got me into listening to other theme songs from the James Bond series. I especially enjoy the ones done in recent years, with Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Die being fine examples of how a James Bond sound is like.

I'm actually considering producing and composing a song along those lines. But what is it about those songs that gave them that James Bond edge? I know they have some really cool brass and string section that can give them that classic swing or jazz vibe, but not everything jazz or swing is James Bond.

Anyone has any thoughts on this?

^ Yes, I know that one. A good song, but quite the Bond song that appeals to me. Even Die Another Day by Madonna, I kinda find it lacking.

Possibly another Bond song that hits close to that feel and vibe is The World is Not Enough by Garbage. If we are referring to the older Bond songs they would be Goldfinger and Thunderball.

The worst Bond theme song has to be Chris Cornell's version for 'Casino Royale', prolly one of the top 3 best Bond movies ever done. That's fer sure...

Check out The Propellorhead's remix/ cover of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. I've no idea if I've already ripped that CD. One of my earlier (and still best) introductions to electronic music, even though the whole big beat is damn passe. They are so in love with Shirley Bassey that they got her to sing on one of their own tunes 'History Repeating'. Fucken amazing song, dude. Go YouTube that tune.

The impeccable Shirley Bassey, of course, was the one who did the amazing 'Diamonds Are Forever'. Kanye West sampled that to amazing effect, I thought.

I have Radiocover's cover of 'Nobody Does It Better' if you want that. Somewhere lying around in my mp3s folder.

It really depends on what kinda Bond era you wanna do. I mean, Duran Duran's 'A View To A Kill' is pretty decent. 80's electro synth pop... with shoulder pads. Nothing wrong with the New Wave thing. It's just the shoulder pads.

My friends and I did a demo called 'Quantum Of Solace' for shits and giggles. We wanted to score our own Bond soundtrack and get Mathilda de Silva to help us sing that song. We scrapped the idea in the end though.

God, when I heard the Chris Cornell's take on the theme song.. I just couldn't believe it was him. I mean, I LIKE the guy, but... :?

Nah, nothing wrong with Duran Duran. But it's pretty much like a reflection of the time the movie was released: it's current, so it kinda lost the innovation. Like how Madonna's Die Another Day is. Good songs, basically. But tries too hard in keeping with the times.

Most would say the songs done by Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Garbage.. though I like them, isn't necessarily an original idea. I mean, just take a look at Buble or Duffy or Amy Winehouse (though of course the songs that were performed by the former were released prior to the latter's popularity).

As recommended, I youtubed Propellerhead's remix. It just... aced. Seriously aced!

I think for me I am looking at the latest theme song as an inspiration. Not say I am trying to pull off a garage rock with orchestra thing. I think the idea of taking the stripped down sound/concept of garage rock and replacing the instruments with classic Bond type classical instruments is pretty cool, though. Throw in a R&B/Soul touch on vocals and you have a refreshing fusion.

Just need to think of ways not to make it sound a like a complete rip off, heh.

Sheena Easton & Matt Monro

Personally....Sheena Easton's 'For Your Eyes Only' & Matt Monro's 'From Russia With Love' is still my favourite.

Hi, Gerry! :)

Between Sheena Easton's and Matt Monro's take, I would think that Matt Monro's one would be a little closer to what I am trying to achieve.

Thanks for the links for the rest of em. Will be checking them out in the morning. Need a fresh mind to approach this, heh.

Originally, Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson were supposed to have a stab at the Quantum Of Solace theme song. I think she was still in Rehab *snicker...* But think of the possibilities!!! Wet dream come true.

Might need your help with some orchestral arrangements if you could...

Am glad you dig Matt Monro....He is one of my favourite all time male singers....Carly Simon's 'Nobody Does It Better' is great music and Carly Simon is truly talented.

The Spy Who Loved Me you mean..But love love love this song, for many years I didn't know it was a bond song. Not really a fan, but Craig Daniel's Bond made me one now.

Hi WASP,

It was from the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me but the song is sung by Carly Simon titled 'Nobody Does It Better.'

The theme song "Nobody Does it Better" was composed by Marvin Hamlisch, written by Carole Bayer Sager, and performed by Carly Simon.
