beat

how to improve sense of beat? some people tell me to practice using a metronome. but i've got problems doing that. and what if there's no metronome? must u have an 'in-built metronome' in ur mind everytime u play?

i've tried that. i find that doing that sometimes hinders playing. n to do that u also have to have the 'in-built metronome' no?

i took it serious  . but tapping feet is one of the most commonly suggested ways to help keep within the beat. most of my friends do that but it's only when playing rhythm and it'd be very difficult to do that while playing lead no?

yeah ... u have to have the inbuild metronome ... but no worries .. can b train ... listen to more songs ... tap your fingers/feet along (if it's a 2/4 = 1 and 2 and, or a 4/4 = 1,2,3,4 etc) ... try to keep in beat with the songs ... after which u have done that, try counting in your mind (not out loud) along with the songs ...

in a way, try to work your brain to work on it's own and goes along with the beat when played. once it's 'inbuild' ... u'll b more comfortable to play along with the songs ...

just my 2¢ :D

Why only tapping feet?

Can't you bob your head to the beat? Groove to it?

And you should get used to a metronome, its an excellent discipline.

sometimes i mute the strings and get the timing in my head to get me going. i mute the strings and go "a one a two a three a foura.." while i chuka chuka scrape the strings with my pick. bobbing the head is also good for keeping the timing right. paul gilbert does that too.

heres him keeping to the beat while playing get out of my yard..

cheers ;)

i've tried using that webbie for metronome. but the sound from my guitar overpowers the sound of the metronome. even when i turn my speakers loud enough, sometimes i lost count (as in, i dunno if four counts is up yet). sounds retarded but it seems that i've only heard me having this problem  .

Hmmm... I don't know if it is recommended to play softly as playing softly is different from playing normally. By the way, I get the same problem too.

However my friend got a metronome which he tweaked abit such that there is a bright blink with each beat. Work great for him.

Perhaps you can try that??

Why... can't you play loudly but turn down the volume of the amp? :D

When practicing is not so much about the tone, but getting the feel right so your techniques, when used, will be consistent.

Just play normally (if it means to pick "loudly", do so) but drop the volume of the amp.

Heck, play clean for a really tough challenge.

XD Haha, pardon me, pardon me, I was having a normal guitar in mind when I typed those. Absolutely forgot about electric guitars. XDDDDDDDDDDDD
