BD-2 and DS-1

Roll back the volume of your guitar a little?

Mine is a clean boost at 1-2, maybe a little under 2.

I think its quite difficult to explain, but the guitar matters too.

What are you playing it with?

I'm on a tele/strat. Moderate output pickups.

the OD-3 preserves the bass response unlike the BD-2. The OD-3 is great for classic rock overdrive. The BD-2 is more fuzzy at high gain settings. Both are equally responsive and transparent. The BD-2 has higher gain than the OD-3.

I noticed too that the BD-2 works much better with single coils through the tube amp. High output humbuckers would give you too much squish and gain I feel. You need good pickups and wood with these pedals as they would magnify your lousy tone if you have lousy pickups/guitar. lol.

Yeah, a good way to test is bring ur pedal to a shop, and try out their guitars, especially with low/moderate output. You will notice the difference between that and yours.

I have tried the OD-3 paired with the BD-2 behind it.

I would say that the tone is downright sexy.
Tone in all honesty is subjective, but I would recommend you to try pairing it at the shops and trying it out.

should re-listen to the OD-3's performance @ higher gain settings- nasal...

Yes.

Up the gain, the midrange pokes out... prob due to the bass cut and compression or what not.

Not a fan of such dirt pedals... so the BD-2 wins for me.

But such a thing can be fixed by a quick mod right?

Since even stock BD-2s dont quite cut it, so whats the overall difference between a modded OD-3 and a modded BD-2?

The BD-2 would sound more "open".... where else the OD-3 sounds more tight, more heavily compressed.

Its like when you palm mute, the OD-3 gives you CHUNK but the BD-2 would sound quite... weak when palm muting.

But when you strum, the OD-3 would sound tight/restrained but the BD-2 is like just screaming and yelling.

Something like that.

I would like to say its transistors vs op-amps but I shall not. Oops, i just did.

Modding it will help, but it really depends on what you wanna do with it.

Some people buy a blues driver to try and get metal tones then give bad reviews.
Some buy metal pedals to get light dirt, and give bad reviews.

Understand what the OD-3 does, it gives a smooth natural overdrive.

In fact, it is Boss's 2nd most natural sounding overdrive in production from their drive chart. (For a lack of a better term)

Ah I get it now, Thanks m8s

But Shredcow, Does more compression mean a more chugga sound?

Im surprised cos Petrucci uses no compression but still gets a monster chugga from his amp  .. Is it the rectifier that does the job for him?

What amp is he using? Maybe its very dirty?

I've heard some country players on teles with no pedals on an overdriven tube amp and over driven tone is seriously very tasteful.

Sometimes no pedal is better.

  Oh yes, Mesa Mark IVs along with Dual Rectifier Solo heads.

Very dirty indeed, but my question is if insane gain alone (without compression) is enough for a thick palm muted sound?

Cos the BD-2 definitlely has more gain than the OD-3 right? How come BD-2 bad for chugga?

Compression dont' up the chug factor... but when you put it together with distortion/overdrive... ahhhh...

It augments the chug... giving you an overall, tighter more punchy tone.

You up the gain, you get compression. :D Petrucci doesn't need to use compression with his gain levels - it has enuogh compression already!

Of course, with everything, different levels of compression for different purposes... best you read up on compression then we can continue this discussion. Compression is very useful...

Not all, just the ones you'd use.

No pt wasting so much money.

The savings can be used for other things, such as eating, sleeping  and other recreational activities that will melt your plastic and thin your wallet.
