BD-2 and DS-1

being the total guitar noob that i am, ive finally decided that it IS time to get a pedal. lol

i scrolled thru the boss site the entire day and cant decide on whether to get the BD-2 or DS-1, simply becos i prefer the tone of these 2 than all the rest.
if i were to put both effects together, is it recommended? does it sound good. i cant get clips of them both together online.

thanks in advance! :D :D :D

i got both. U can use the bd-2 to boost although its a much heavier gain unit than a TS-9 or a OD-3 careful with the gain, it might make it sizzle and fuzz abit too much for your liking, When used together with the DS-1.

It is a possible combination, Although i recommend a less heavier gain unit such as an OD-3 to boost the DS-1 or a TS-9.

I used to own both, the BD-2 responds very well to single coil guitars, ie it responds to how hard u pick. But for humbuckers, its a different story, it gives a very thick tone, very smooth. Find the BD-2 versatile too as it can go from crunch to overdrive to near (but not) distortion. But its pretty noisy with my single coil fender strat. Sub wrote a review for this pedal in the review section, go check it out.

For DS-1, i find it too muddy and lacks definition to my liking, but then there are alot of DS-1 fans out there who think otherwise. I sold it off after I got my BD-2.

Why dun you try other pedals too?

My advice is to find an experienced guitarist friend and zoom down to Swee Lee and try out their pedals.

ds1 seems almost out of stock. been to peninsular/excelsior, bras basah and peace ctr, all 3 areas sold out of ds-1 :( :( :(

ah anyways, im thinking of getting both and joining it up, lol, hope the tone goes well

The BD-2 is Boss' secret weapon... if modded. Its the best in-production Boss dirt pedal for me and the only one I'd consider in my board...

That said.

Tell us WHAT YOU WANT... what tones you want?

Then perhaps we would have some... better recommendations for you.

lol, i always loved the tone in those famous tunes of oldmen bands lyk THE WHO. and i listen to lots of punk, more towards yellowcard and greenday.

will both pedals work well together? lol

I paired up my BD-2 and a DS-2

It may seem weird but no, it sounds great.

I use single coil strat/teles going into a DS-2 -> BD-2

Distort before overdrive.

The gain on the BD-2 can get VERY VERY high. Its range is very wide.

The BD-2 is a sweet sweet pedal. But please try before you buy.

You might end up with an OD-3 instead.

Hey bassist, if ever u are interested in a Modded BD2, do drop me a pm, got one for sale :D U should also consider a TS9 or a SD1 to stack the BD2, excellent results u can get there :D

hey bro, i dont think its that fair to compare the ds1 and the bd2, after all, one is an overdrive one is a distortion, its like apple and orange (well, not quite). the ds1 is a straightforward distortion and the bd2 (modded) is by far the best sounding od in my opinion. so i think you should see what kinda music you wana play and go from there.

...the bd2 was like the japanese answer to the call for Marshally crunch
in a pedal thus the stacked transistor design through an opamp to smoothen the harsh spikes .... its one of kind that cleans up retaining much calrity and gain controllable with guitar volume knob ....which is unlikely with op-amp clippers TS or DS.

Ealier versions were desired for it's smoothness and thus the current issues with its thin shrills are given to various mods makin it palatable.

F'more it's Gain knob gives from clean boost - crunch - dist to almost touchin fuzz, thus the versatility which makes it desirable!!

The secret is the compression that people love without realising its apparent much like an overdriven amp ....give it spin !! :D

He summed it up very well.

The BD-2 even when unmodded is a very modest pedal.
Mine has not been modded yet and I am already contented with the tones. Yes you can blast me for unmodding it, but I got what I wanted out of it.

The gain knob at 1-2 is clean boost, 3-8 is crunch, 8-10 is almost fuzzy.

I pair it when the DS-2 on turbo mode with the dist at 7 and BD-2 at 8 and it sounds somewhat like a fuzz box.

lightice, You managed to get a clean boost with your BD-2? Even with my gain on 0 it seems to add a minimal amount of dirt.. Weird
