I've been an ardent fan of the annual baybeats event way back since i was in sec 2 when i haven't even picked up an instrument. I remember how it used to be really wild in the pit and the anticipation of danger with punks walking around the venue was something to look forward to.
But the previous two baybeats seem to have mellowed down a whole lot. It is no wonder that we no longer see a wild crowd there, instead the esplanade seems to transform into a barely legal scene kid playground nowadays.
My band, Bad Obsession (hard rock, not even metal) has tried out for BayBeats for two years straight but to no avail.
Baybeats is and probably will always be an indie/pop/mainstream festival and Esplanade is probably not going for the heavier bands to prevent unfavourable occurances (heavier bands often draw wilder crowds) from tarnishing their reputation and possibly cancelling out future large-scale music festivals.
Its basically how the click5 will never play ozzfest - the nature of the event.
Though it would be awesome to one day be able to play Baybeats or even see a hard rock band blaze the stage.
Still having events like these are a blessing to the local scene, whether or not they are deemed to favour only certain genres.
