Art Students in JC

That is the most brillant piece of advice i ever seen.
Could i quote it on my blog?

The Arts

This includes drama, poetry, fine arts, among a few other stuff. Intellectal stuff. There is math to everything, and these are not exceptions. Be thankful you're getting taught some math, because real math is nothing like what schools have in their textbooks. Also, it doesn't matter if you fail throughout the route. Some things definitely get inside your mind, and that's enough to survive in this world. You'll not be the fittest, but you will be fit.

Those who challenge the flow and are able to see 10-20 years in the future are the ones that do badly in terms of academics. A paper which says you can do this and that is not valid everywhere. Those who go by the book, with the flow, the goats, are the ones that will serve the puppets of the puppets, and will be the examples of "good students". In truth, they are only moulded - they don't mould themselves.

Ah, it's my ambition to be a politician.

I don't really know if I should continue to stay on in a JC because I'm already beginning to dislike the rigidity and the stupid subject combinations which they offer.

I guess that's the reason why there are so many people heading for Polytechnic courses these days.

Stay on bro. It's definitely worth it... not looking down on Polytechnic diplomas, but I feel that JC will better prepare you mentally for university. Polytechnic trains you for your presentation and your project skills, but JC prepares you for the workload, the readings and the examinations.

Anyway, to be a politician, any degree will do. You have to be actively involved in grassroot movements, and be headhunted by the government ;). But a degree in economics would be good because you can better understand what's going on in society.

I'm a political science major in uni, and whoever tells you that you need to take political science to be a politician is either ignorant or doesn't understand what political science is all about.

I got a question: SHOULDN'T YOU KNOW ABOUT SUBJECT COMBINATIONS BEFORE ENTERING JC???
I'm very sure every single person was briefed on (1) what goes on in JC studies (2) what goes on in Polytechnic studies. If you weren't, I blame: the people who told you to go to JC / your secondary school / your JC, and maybe yourself for not finding out earlier. I'm just taken aback at how someone can enter JC and realise that the subject combinations are the same as secondary school style of grouping etc.~

Anyway, the first post of this page (previous-previous-post) quotes the best advice given so far.
My opinion is that "ARTS" was just a name to give "THE OTHER STREAM" because, obviously, "SCIENCE" has a higher requirement to get into, so you can see "ARTS" as a "loser" stream in most cases.
I've heard of "nerds" saying "if i dont get in science, there's no way in hell i'm going arts", which, IMO, makes no friggin difference because all you need is an A level cert with good scores to get into a University (why not do the "easier" one so you get higher scores?)

Politician? Do share why you want to be a politician! I am very curious as to why people wanna get involved in a "leadership" role that ends up, most of the time, making other people hate you. I for one have a 50-50 like-dislike for politicians, depending on their post and their cause, but I've never liked the idea of being one since it involves alot of "bullshitting". So yeah, DO SHARE :D If you're shy you can always pm me your answer that'd be great.

You are not helping him in any way so why bother even typing?

Eh, obviously I had known from the start that the subject combinations will be different. It's just that I didn't know about the... Erh... Inflexibility. Especially for the Arts stream.

By the way, I am not gonna take up Political Science in University. I just don't like the idea of social science being a science itself. I'm taking up History. Okay, or rather, that's my aim. And yeah, I sure do know that to be a politician, you can have any degree. But it's just that I feel that taking up History makes more sense and it's my interest anyway. It's like killing two birds with a stone.

If you're asking me why do I want to be a politician, it's because I want to challenge the current system. My answer is as simple as that.

Keep it up, stay in contact. When i do well in my business in future i will be sure to sponsor your party. I always wanted to be involved in politics but i figured out the business people are the ones who influence the politicians.

Be sure to give me your email or something.

Hee I once too had dreams to challenge the system (political, educational) after my terrible 2 years in JC. And I still do harbor a lot of negativity towards the education system.

Well what I feel is that you are entitled to have these negative thoughts about everything around you, and be unhappy about the inflexible subject combination that you are stuck in, but the bottom line is to explore and be firm on courses that you want to take up in uni as well as your future prospects , and then work hard enough to get there. No use being unhappy about the subject(s) that you really detest and end up doing badly in them.

Most of the things you will learn in JC is IMO hardship (from all the retarded studying), intellect, and plenty of 'not so useful knowledge'. You can be now taking Physics and doing Psychology in Uni, totally unrelated! So unless mugging is the thing for you, please just spend 2 years studying hard, and we hope to see you as a leader (hopefully a good one too) in the years to come!
(My results will be out about next week or so, and I would probably not make it to uni..)

Very importantly please do think hard about your dream to politics-dom. As what CrispyEgg says, you better have strong reasons for yourself to in be in that field which not many would want to be in. Also, think of alternatives for yourself, you may one day feel that it is pointless challenging the system and hence give up. If the time comes, don't get yourself stuck in a rut.

I might not know much about your situation, but just my 2 cents. Cheers! (A badass and true as hell piece of advise from gutturalpiss btw)

Hmm, I think it was 'cuz of the shock I got when I heard that he wasn't fully aware of the inflexibility of JC subject-choices and yeah it was just shock-and-response.

Anyway, you've got a pretty nice reason going for yourself there. To share with you - I'm gonna have about 5 years more being stuck here in Singapore, hopefully they'll grant me citizenship (i'm a PR cuz i wasn't born here but i spent my whole life here -.-). Well if they don't and I find my career boring, I'll move to Japan (simply put, i like everything about Japan. It's not that far off from Singapore, everything is expensive but lifestyles are a little different) and start over. Music is competitive there, but it's definitely alive and the industry is big and well accepted. Oh and music isn't my only career path so I'll take whatever fits my other obsessions.

Ok I blabbered too much again =X what i meant to say is: don't you notice alot of Singaporeans moving out of the country? Is there even an identity that grows out of one being a Singaporean, because I doubt that many of our current politicians are devoted to the people of the country. The street man will only know how to complain in your face, and you'll have to resort to making decisions you don't want to, so how do politicians keep sane man. If you change the system, I hope it is a change for the better, Singapore is pretty stable as it is - it just lacks the feeling of belonging, of "home" IMO.

And if i'm not wrong, you don't need a politically aligned degree in order to go into politics, you just have to do your homework and have some sort of financial backing. How to set up an opposition party? Stay in hougang, maybe you'll find friends there.

(did i get the estate correct? i hope so, otherwise the joke will be ruined.)

It's potong pasir. -.-

Ah, just follow your dreams.

Just like what Chris Gardner had said to his son in the Pursuit of Happiness:"If you have a dream, you must go for it. Do not let anyone rob you of your chance to go for it. Not even me."

Graduated frm AJC in '05, i didnt get my choice of subject combination too, i wanted to do a mixed combination, back then the system hadn't change yet, you have to either take a purely science or a purely arts subject combination. i'm very much interested in the arts, but i wanted to do science too ,just to be on the safe side. I appealed to do a mixed combination , unfortunately, they couldn't do it, well, because of time table reasons too. So in the end i ended up in the science subject combination.

Right now, its arts for me, i'm through with science. Got a place in NUS FASS.

well if it isnt too late for you, you might wanna consider 'greener pastures' else where

and ,I believe econs is more of an arts subject than Geography.

I think of it the other way round. Geography is more Arts-based than Econs.

Pity I aren't taking Geography anymore. All thanks to the inflexible system which prohibits me from studying History and Geography at the same time. Holy shit.

I am not aware that you can't study History and Geog at the same time. Is that a certain rule in your school or did the education ministry implement something new lately?

The actual A level exam is on the same day. I know only CJC offers history and geography combination.

eh, then how the cjc students taking hist and geog going to do their exams? you mean same day but different time right

Are they? I don't think History and Geography papers are on the same day...

And yes, it's a certain school rule. I can't take H2 History and Geography together cos only two students in the school want that. They totally refuse to give us our combination.

And the thing is. There are students in the school who take H2 Geography and another batch of students who take H2 History.

I do not see why I cannot fit in.

they're probably got the time table set in stone . As you said history and geog lessons are conducted concurrently, to accomodate these 2 students, they will mess up the timetable. Unlikely that they will do that.
anyway, just so you know, AJC dont have a very good record of accepting feedback from the student population.
