Are we being taken for a 'ride'? (bus fare woes)

I have yet to see someone ask this question and get straight answers without people starting to rant about the government.

Oh well here's mine anyway. I'm take 2 buses to and from work everyday. I'm paying less.

Okay. So life goes on and its never fair for all.
But everyone controls what they make for themselves.
And whatever that is, it'll inadvertently effect everything and everyone else, no matter how insignificant it may be.

I suppose its a question of 'fairness' here.
How is it fair that 31% is paying more than before when they patronise the same company, enduring overcrowded buses, slow and/or reckless drivers, long waiting time for buses, traffic conditions, sauna buses..... etc?

Is the 31% paying for (as boyl puts it)...
"...advertisements are there to make it 'nicer'. Think of it as a marketing gimmick to cover up a price hike.Besides, if you really believed that it is cheaper, think of it this way: it costs a hell lot of money to just replace all the bus directory information in every single bus stop, not to mention upgrading the software to the 'cheaper' fare-by-distance system. Do you honestly think they are willing to waste that much money if in the end they will not earn it back?"?

Although those hit are only 31% (think the poor 'ah sohs'), everyones already finding it hard to make ends meet.
Whoever gives the 'go-ahead' for this change ought to take heed of the feedback (& the rants as well) even though it wont make much of a change.

Looks like its going to be a long ride.

I think for those paying more now means they were undercharged in the past?

To solve the overcrowding problem, we cannot expect the frequency/capacity of the transport system to increase much more. We can optimise by spreading out the 'peak' hours. Companies/schools can adjust their start/stop hours. This way, there will be lesser people needing to squeeze.

It's true we're paying more. You know, the old fare system, for the first few bus stops after you board, it's only $0.69 for the adult EZ-Link?

Now, it's $0.71.

I just hope they quickly implement distance based road tax and vehicle insurance! We should pay for what we use and not a one-price-for-all.

Heh if my company adjusts working hours to 10am - 8pm I'll have super relaxing rides on the bus.

mmm everything is getting more expensive and salaries aren't increasing as much! :( kind of terrible to be entering the workforce soon under such conditions. If even public transportation finds excuses to raise prices every year, I think I'll soon start cycling everywhere. Which is a good thing except for the crazy high risk for accidents and stuff.

Anyway, i wouldn't figure it feasible to adjust 'peak hours' per se, to me i think it will severely affect the family unit. People don't see their families too often already with our crazy working hours, 'spreading the hurt' around to lessen the burden on the transportation capabilities doesn't seem like a workable solution.

On the bright side, when the circle line is completely open (buona vista to serangoon.. or was it bishan?) and in future the downtown line and stuff I suppose we'll all be better off especially when heading to town and CBD areas

theres never a good time to enter workforce, imho. It more on how we can cope with things.

Just wondering, how many of us here, due to the "increase" of fare, will actually re plan a travelling schedule, to and fro work/to anywhere else, just to save that amount of money, which might indrectly create more transfers between buses/mrt vice versa and thus result in more time taken on the road everyday?

If you decided to stick with same ole route, but might have to pay more, do you LL suck thumb and continue to moan about rising cost or find ways to save money?

Just curiousity on my side coz seem like these thread on the new fare system(hardwarezone edmw were talking bout same thing last month with similar or more over the top reaction from various folks), more seem to feedback, but not sure what they will do, to save some money.

Everything is costing more now cos your standard of living is much higher. If want things to cost the same as last time do the following:

- Cancel your handphone line.
- Cancel your cable tv.
- Cancel your internet.
- Bring a water bottle when you go out.
- Bring your own homemade lunch to work.

Taadaah, you are now at least $200 richer every month and can stop complaining that you can't afford basic necessities.

LOLz...
- Did that. No home tel line. H/p is pre-paid
- no cable TV
- internet is prepaid
- always in the bag
- yup. sometimes lunch is biscuits if forget to bring

... and getting poorer with every trip to work.
How about that :)

Ha then no choice bro, I feel sad for you. You're one of those that really have finances to worry about. Sadly every generation, every country, every race will have people who struggle and have people who live lives of luxary.

Lmao, you sound like that politician's daughter from a few years back who was part of the "ELITE". People all need a form of relaxation. I agree a lot of people waste their money away, but if you work dead end jobs to pay for your family and children, sometimes things like cigarettes and tv make your life slightly better.

Appreciate the empathy.

So does this mean I can keep on complaining? *joke - lah*

Hahahaa bro, you really got my respect man. I mean it's like, are there that many grateful people like you? Don't think so. Okok side-track.

And indeed, this is Singapore man. The only free things are stuff like cold water from airport and helium balloons. I used to think that this Distance Fares thingy is a Displacement Fares thing. Eh, that would be FAR FAAARRR better man. But government will lose of course. Haha. Anyway, I'm using student concession and I thought that there would be no difference. But it's now $97 per month for bus+train. Used to be $93 tho'. Even MORE expensive.

But we're not complaining yeah? Just accept it. This is Singapore. =D

well, i just came back from Cambodia, and i guess i miss the tuk tuks that take you to anywhere you want to go for US$0.50 . and of course their AngKor beer which cost less than US$0.50 per can (!). But then again, the average Cambodian earn between USD30-60 per month. So i guess, still we have much to be grateful for in Singapore.

Oil prices is always on the rise, it is inevitable that transport costs will be pressured to follow suit. Besides, the increase is somewhat negligible when compared to our monthly expenditure. It wont deter the most of us from getting our next guitar, our next effects pedal, wouldnt it?
Anyway i believe sooner or later, market pressure will force the wages up correspondingly..

Perhaps what is unacceptable is that SBS/SMRT and the Public Transport Council are not being honest or transparent about this re-adjustment in fares. According to http://www.pressrun.net/weblog/2010/07/old-and-new-bus-fares-compared.html and many other sources , the distance based fares is clearly a price hike. If they are going increase the fare, just call it a price hike, why disguise it as the fanciful idea of 'distance based fares'?

True.

PTC and SBS/SMRT all same gang one lah. Whatever PTC say is all for show or wayang only. To "appease" the public so as to say......as if the government is doing something.

We have seen all these before during previous price hikes or high-profile blunders. The same goes for MDA and SingTel, MAS and DBS, EMA and SP, and others of their ilk. The obvious correlation is there. No doubt they are so-called public listed companies, but they are still co-owned by the PAP government which has a vested interest in them.
