Apple IMAC VS Windows Notebooks

If you want the warranty that much, just go for something with a windows OS la. It's more common, though slightly less unstable platform that people use. And i'm sure most people still opt for windows OS based laptops. Working with others, also much easier, since everything is the same.

yup maybe in between lessons surely got breaks , then i thought i could do some simple DJ mix on my notebook to pass off the time by uploading WMA/MP3 files from my notebook and into my Magix Studio 2004 Deluxe Software :D

yah lah juz casual mixing and recording at it's very basic level...

i think a Centrino processor with 512 RAM and 60GB of space is more than enough for me

Mac is nice if you know that you are using it for a dedicated purpose. The main drawbacks as I see are price and software availability.

Personally, I think the Mac is overpriced because of the audience that they market towards - Multimedia power users (such as graphic artists and musicians) and 'lifestyle' users who I think of as almost casual users - they just want a basic setup in the house to do some simple internet surfing, maybe do the odd bit of word processing and use it to dock their iPod. Apple knows that these classes of user have a lot of $$, so they put the thing in a stylish looking white case that goes with peoples' furniture and give the mouse only one button and charge you more than it's worth.

You can get the PC equivalents far cheaper. On top of this, the amount of PC software available outnumbers the Mac software by some enormous ratio (if I randomly choose 100:1 I doubt I will be far wrong...). If you have any interest in games, you'll also find Mac terribly dissapointing. Only the very biggest titles even have a chance to get conversions into Mac titles - in most cases, for the size of the market it just isn't worth the Software Developers' time to go and build a Mac version.

Sadly, as good as it is (despite the $$$) the Mac will remain 'niche' for a while to come, along with all the compatibility issues that go along with it.

Now, the good news is that there is some very cool software called 'Virtual PC' that allows you to run a Windows Operating System in an emulated environment on the Mac, which of course allows you to run any Windows software. Check it out - it's cool!

Of course, for high-end CPU-intensive applications such as games you'll need a pretty powerful processor...

the virtual PC has existed for a long time since the days of the imac, but gotta warn ya it's incredibly slow and not really efficient, plus it hangs pretty easily. most mass commers in my school, as i have noticed, use a lot of ibooks and powerbooks, so i guess it's pretty common to have one if you're going into that faculty. if you already have another pc at home then get the mac, lasts longer too due to the stability.

i studied in NP, getting an available power plug during breaks is almost impossible, just like finding an empty to have lunch coz we got too many students and too little places to chill. Mac's batteries last longer than Pc, my Pc went from 4hrs to 1hr in just a few weeks of use, which is really annoying.

Np has got firewall on some sites, if you're uploading from somewhere, it maybe restricted. signing into MSN messenger is a lot of trouble. plus not everywhere on campus can get good signal strength. :(

yeah you're right about the warranty thing. my laptop started to break down only in year 3, and i got to change all the parts for free. But my other classmates had to pay, it depends. However, i find that the authorized vendors sell us really no-good laptops too, so it breaks down pretty easily. Most hard core users, like using it more than 5 hours everyday, their's break down really easily. but depends on your luck. if you get a good one, then it'll last long, if not, see you at MeL. haha.. their service isn't really good and takes pretty long to fix things (1 week to months). so getting a mac is much worth for money, IMO.

i think mac is more value for money all along. i would have gotta an ibook if i wasn't in business.. :(

I love ibooks!

They have this software called "garage band" or sth and you can plug your guitar into your comp and use that software as your amp. but they cost alot that's all i have to say... but i've heard that there's a lesser risk of getting a virus and stuff...

Well VPC has come a long way in terms of stability now, and of course with CPU power increasing all the time it's becoming a more and more attractive proposition all the time. I can comfortably run 2 Windows Server 2003 instances in seperate VPCs on top of a Windows XP host with a 1GHz P4 and 1 GB RAM.

hahaa looks like toshiba left. how strange, 3/4 of NP students use toshiba. oh well, at least acer looks better. i really regretted not getting the toshiba protege, it's really slim and light. when you gotta carry laptop to school a few times a week, and gotta move around campus, you'll wish you got the lightest laptop. :)

If you want to do music applications with it also, don't just go for lightweight - go for processing power. My notebook weighs 7kg without the battery.

Anyhow, you'll got to balance your needs.

mmm i just got into interactive media design in tp and i'm wondering if i need to get a laptop too. anyone from the same course and skool ? haha i need to know what are the requirements for the laptop and also if it's better to get windows or mac. haha someone help me pls :)
