Anyone tried those Dr Z amps at SV Guitars?

I haven't gone to the city area these past few days due to my very busy sked and not really that inclined to buy amps now but they piqued my curiosity as I was interested in them before but there was no dealer here yet. Any guys here who managed to test them? I confirmed thru phone they have a carmen ghia and a maz jr.

Hey man. I just tried the maz jr yesterday, unfortunately they don't have the NR version of it. The cleans sounded great thru the 2x12, the cut control was pretty useful in getting (or getting rid of) that edge. The amp didn't need much tweaking to sound good n its hard to overdrive at bedroom levels.

Thanks ck. I'm wondering why would Dr Z use celestion vintage 30's as stock speakers for their Z-best 2 x 12 cabs. I was expecting they would use something with less upper mids or warmer speakers or they would match one V30 with other Celestion speakers.

My friend Ken Fischer used to work with Dr Z (they licensed his Airbrake power attenuator) and he told me they are wonderful amps. His brother plays a Carmen Ghia in clubs in the US and can't get it past half, so they are very loud amps for their size. Remember that these amps are not for bedrooms and rehersal studios - they are performing amps, which is why they would use the Vintage 30's. When you run the amps harder, the V30's will have a better bass and low mid tone.

What, You know Ken Fischer!? Didn't realise the Carmen Ghia was that loud, its simple looks deceive me haha.

I'm not sure if Dr. Z still make the attenuator as they were made under licence from Trainwreck and it's been a couple of years now since Ken passed away. If you are in the market for an attenuator it is the best - you can find them on eBay if you are lucky - very little effect on the tone and dynamics of the amp.

With regard to the little Ghia - size doesn't always matter!

cheers,

Mark.

I see, they're still listed on the Dr Z website so I'm assuming that the Air Brakes are still in production (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I'll definitely consider that when I'm looking for an attenuator. Thanks man.

You're welcome.

A mate in Singapore found one on eBay a couple of years ago and another friend here found one on eBay last year too. You can save a fair bit buying them that way, even taking into account the shipping, and they are built like tanks so don't break down easily.

cheers,

Mark.

Wait wait wait, Mark, you knew Ken Fischer? o_O

And yes Dr. Z still makes the Air Brake as well as the Air Brake Lite and Air Brake Lite SA, great attenuators, a little on the pricey side but they are what they are.

Yes, I knew Ken. It was a great blow to me when he passed away a couple of years ago as we had developed a wonderful friendship.

I think that the Air Brake lite is Dr. Z's version - not Ken's, so I don't think that is such a good one. You can still find the Air Brakes on eBay for around $200 US, so they are not too expensive.

You have a good one.

Mark.

Thanks for your input. Yeah, that could very well be the case. It's just that I wasn't expecting V30's for the Dr Z target demographic of players. I was expecting those sweet alnico speakers instead of a speaker that a lot of hard rock/metal bands also use.

Someone has to keep the people entertained with nonsense! I'll be in Germany in ten days time and enjoying my friend's guitars and amps - will have to remind myself that I'm there to sell paintings too!

You have a good one.

Hi guys, I've owned the Ghia since 2004-5 and the Maz 38 snr since 2007. Check me out playing it live at the Esplanade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yykp5DvWxnY&feature=player_embedded and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sinrAnQGi0Q&feature=player_embedded#at=27
I basically swear by these amps. It'll cut thru any mix, it's clean, it's a tone machine. Brad Paisley uses them and you know how good his tone is.
I recently changed the all the tubes in the Maz 38 SNR and got the Polam EL84 NOS tubes in them. It now sounds even better, the single notes are now even more articulate. It's lovely. Check out my before and after video of the power tube change - Groove Tubes vs Polam. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoDzRkHnZOs

And I would recommend either the Tone Tubby Red or the Celestion Golds for them.

Thanks guys! I'm just very excited that someone has finally brought in Zs to our shores! They are the best amps if you like clean sounds....and a great breath of fresh air from all the Fender, Marshall and Peavy amps going around.

If you guys like rock, alternative, look for Soldano amps...I'm not sure if anyone carries them in Singapore.

Its quite a pleasant surprise to see Dr Zs around in SG. I do wish they brought in the maz 18s though. Heard generally the Z's take pedals really well..
