fingering and picking is two different style, so there is no fighting about which style is more cooler and more professional. some songs u just cant play with a pick due to fast scaling and technics, also need to project more low end gain/ bass sound . some songs are better play with a pick, like constant riffing (example: punk) and need to project more sharp and treble sound.
the technic of picking pattern is idenitcal to double tumbing, well i also dunnoe who came up with using a pick for a bass, well maybe he felt that he looked stupid double tumbing the whole punk song, lol just kidding. but comes to the end, its still up to the musician favourities to use which one they feel more comfortable with. for me i switched both technics depending on what songs i'm gonna play, but i usually train on picks cuz i am a pick player as i do punk. like example if i feel like playing RHCP or muse or some alternative or metal songs i will throw my pick one side.
i'm not a professional, i am not very good, either do i have alot of bass knowledge, but this is all i know from my experiance.
