Each to his own. It would be even better if one learns both styles, to add versatility to one's own sound.

yea some people like picks some people like fingers i seem to like picks for that packed gunny sound and fingers for that smooth appoarch so as rylche says learn both together best

*picks up a pick and stares at it* time to learn PICKING!

fingering and picking is two different style, so there is no fighting about which style is more cooler and more professional. some songs u just cant play with a pick due to fast scaling and technics, also need to project more low end gain/ bass sound . some songs are better play with a pick, like constant riffing (example: punk) and need to project more sharp and treble sound.
the technic of picking pattern is idenitcal to double tumbing, well i also dunnoe who came up with using a pick for a bass, well maybe he felt that he looked stupid double tumbing the whole punk song, lol just kidding. but comes to the end, its still up to the musician favourities to use which one they feel more comfortable with. for me i switched both technics depending on what songs i'm gonna play, but i usually train on picks cuz i am a pick player as i do punk. like example if i feel like playing RHCP or muse or some alternative or metal songs i will throw my pick one side.

i'm not a professional, i am not very good, either do i have alot of bass knowledge, but this is all i know from my experiance.

well, i started out picking when i started bass.

now still picking, and i dun find it gay...

i.m.o. i find picking u can get certain sounds, fingering another type.

guess u cant get the best of both worlds unless u pick and finger the same time lolz.

Don't worry, it's always harder in the beginning.

Playing fast with your fingers requires coordination to ensure that you get an even sound with both fingers, so a lot of practice is involved.

I started on a pick too, but went on to learn how to play fingerstyle after being inspired by players like Cliff Burton and Steve Harris.

It will get better, and you will start to have fun playing fingerstyle.....until you have to sing backup as well. :?

who's hes new bassist ah. i heard an acoustic version of scarified with a very sick pick tone, prolly is his new bassist

My teacher schooled me in the ways of the Fingerstyle ever since i started. Tried pick once and then but I only play them to get the extra growly and chunky sound when playing really simple punk cos I'm not very proficient with the pick.
