i started with and play bass 90% of the time on fingers.
however, there is a certain range of tone and sound that playing with a pick offers, which is why i do play and write some of my songs with pick-playing. you can get a really nice, steady, chunky thud with a pick if you know how to use it, and if you learn to use it well you can get all sorts of tones out of it.
fingers are generally warmer, and yet if you know how you can mimick pick tone with your fingers. picks are generally harder and chunkier, yet if you know how, you can mimick warm finger tones with your pick.
learning both is beneficial. =)
