any pick playas here?

i started with and play bass 90% of the time on fingers.

however, there is a certain range of tone and sound that playing with a pick offers, which is why i do play and write some of my songs with pick-playing. you can get a really nice, steady, chunky thud with a pick if you know how to use it, and if you learn to use it well you can get all sorts of tones out of it.

fingers are generally warmer, and yet if you know how you can mimick pick tone with your fingers. picks are generally harder and chunkier, yet if you know how, you can mimick warm finger tones with your pick.

learning both is beneficial. =)

Im a guitarist turned bassist so its natural that i use a pick. Tried to use fingerstyle but could not get the rock feel.

End of the day, use whichever is confortable for you...

I pick the pick over fingerstyle.

It's all up to the user preferance on the tone he/she wants. For me, I use both pick and finger.

I prefer to use finger most of the time but, my friend would recommend me to use pick. They said that pick can produce louder tone. I just played better using finger than pick.

i don't agree that pick can produce a louder tone ...

i believe it's due to the nature of the technique that it sounds louder .. but i know of bass players who plays LOUD with their fingers ... it's subjective ...

so it's more of a preference for players i believe ...

Do pick always being used by people playing punk rock? That is what I think. Bah, I should play punk rock with finger. HaHa!

roger glover play punk rock meh?glenn hughes also play punk rock ah? dont b!tch about something that you dont know la dude

thats what many ppl thinks actually. use pick = punk rock , use finger = jazz player. And nope , using a pick doesn't produce a louder sound. It just produce a sharper tone for me.

i'm a pick user : )

precision

Ya la I use both too...but a pick stroke is much more direct, defined and dynamic in average...but of course if you stroke very hard like the guy from Iron Maiden it sounds very rocky too...when I whatch music DVDs I can see that some play with fingers in slow songs and with pick in fast songs...

So I say: using a pick is as professional as using fingers

The more conservative point of view using fingers is preferred because in classic music + jazz the contrabass guys only (can) use fingers...

keep rockin

I started learning bass using fingers, now im trying to convert to picks, as fingers can't give me the exact tone needed for my songs, lol.

haha, im kind of a new bassist.getting an AX-104 ESP bass tmr.

btw, anyone here knows any tips on jazz bass techniques from basic?

basic bass playing techniques are rather generic... jazz more like a style of music so just get good foundations and try not to leave anything out

ok..but i think i have my foundations right..haha.i can play couple of songs alrdy and i just want to know how to master jazz bass.

there are a couple of books on different styles, including jazz bass. i think they will be very useful. you can also try and practice jazz songs. play out of your comfort zone, you will improve :D

oh, and about pick playing, certain kinds of chords and double stops cannot be played with a pick. also, tapping and slapping is out of the question

well, for me.. im a picking user...hmm..still finding the right hard pick size for me... anybody like HOTPICK??

is nice..but i haven't try yet..so yeah..

currently using a med-hard pick..

when you're using a pick you actually can do what guitarist do..Alternative pick in a high speed but of course you're using more force..but

TRY not to do it on E-string...hahahaha..

it really depends, if possible you need to know more ways when play bass, i got stuck in Slapping...haxi...

hmmm, playing bass with pick, i've no complaints playing either way, finger or pick, but with fingers, as im a guitar player also, i find that the volume between my 3 fingers is not veri balanced, so i play with a pick

and also it gives me tons of speed, a more uniform volume and i kinda like the janglier tone

BUT, i realised that for me there is another trade-off with playing with a pick

with mi bass strapped high, fretting is so much easier, but picking tires my picking hand very fast(i like to pick veri close to the bridge)

with mi bass strapped low(below mi zipper), fretting is a bitch, but picking is ultra convenient, which is why i now know that punk rock/emo/indie bassists are really not posuers when their basses are strapped so low

so gotta find a balance in strap height, somewhere in between

and also another thing about playing with picks, i dunno but i use pickboy 1.5mm picks and i also use them for guitar, playing bass, i wear out about half the pick in half an hour =)

i think why most P/E/I bassist uses pick is because their songs tempo n beat are generally faster and the chunky thud-ky sounds fits better with distort sounds.. just my feeling

myself, i'm learning both but i tend to get lost with the number of note when playing fast P/E/I song with the pick; tried alternating picking but it kinda alt pick when on the E string so i down pick most often.

eh, i've ever read something about bassists in particular using felt picks. anyone know anything about that? supposed to give a sound closer to finger playing
