any pick playas here?

there was another similar thread. do look around, everyone posted their fair share of preferences, thoughts about pick playing, etc.

correction: i'm guessing 30-40% of bass players in singapore use picks, not 10%. i've seen a plenty of (esp teenagers) bassists using picks nowadays. and i'm guessing 50% of them are just too lazy to train the right hand fingerstyle technique and choose picking because it's "got more attitude" and allows them "more stamina" whilst playing.

i thought picking was old school... check out jimi hendrix's voodoo child or purple haze vid... the dude is using a pick... fingerstyle is easier i thought? or am i just weird

haha i always thought that most jazzers would use fingers and most punk playas would use a pick....actually i like the sound of pick more but fingers is easier for me too

depending on the song..also the tempo of the song..

but most of the time..its fingerstyle..but i use only my middle finger and index..tryin to train my ring finger..but its hard.

Haha, after some practice, i have no problems using my ring finger. But just not fast lah. I still think my two-finger alternating thing is faster than 3-finger picking. Individual preferences perhaps?

so, I USE A PICK!!! and my 1-2 alternating fingerstyle not very good... cos my middle finger less strength and it's slower than my index...

for example, when i use a pick i can do this
1212 1212 1212 1212 (up down, up down)

but with my fingers i screw up and do this
1211 2 1211 2.

ring finger is only possible after puberty

 ..gah..i tink i got 3 more years before puberty ends..does it end at 21?

i play with 3 fingers too...i think the speed is about the same as 2fingers but tire out less easily. But 2 is enough for most ppl la...think jaco, juan alderete, steve harris etc.

However I feel that a pick has the potential to go faster when skipping strings and more cutting sound, but its harder to play multiple strings at once w pick and also harder to slap and pop. Incase you pickers duNno how to slap with pick, I just found a way....that is to hold the pick between your index and ring finger instead of using your thumb and index.

i tink i get wad u mean..but..isnt it harder to slap and pop??

i tink it might be hard to control.

well i guess its harder abit since you have to hold it between ur index and middle finger, but with enough practise itll come like 2nd nature..

wooit

hey brandon dude....

im not sure whether using pick is better... but i prefer using the pick to make the sound projection better... just that my fingers arent that stong though

be versatile in both ...better if can tap with your elbows !!

Practise over a drum loop from your pc >>.drum machine !!

not me. i'm not gonna die of bacterial or fungal poisoning from licking rust.

what are the chances of you traveling around the world to perform with elbow tapping and tongue licking tricks?
what are the chances of you having a video and many people watching it and talking about it and you'll be remembered for your tongue licking and elbow tapping tricks?
or how many other amazing musicians would wanna jam with you because of your tongue lickin elbow tappin tricks?

i'd rather just play bass the way it's always been played, with my fingers. or a pick. whatever rocks your boat.

jk lah crispy... unless you start having nylon strings for bass... no darn way! haha. i think bro goose bro also jk.

from personal experience...

i was asked to play bass once for a school concert and by default i grabbed my pick from my guitar case. ive read somewhere that using a pick gives a sharper and louder sound. i was right about the sharper tone tho', but i was wrong about the loud part

a friend from another band in school told me not to use a pick cuz its not very clear sounding and playing with your 2 fingers would sound better. he was right, the concert went well cuz i used my 2 fingers to play. even with a 10 watt amp plugged into my bass for that day, the warm fullness of the tone reached the audience. my lesson learnt.

so in conclusion the pick kills and reduces the tone of your bass in half. you may have a sharp tone but the tonality isnt complete. i think you can use those really thick 1.0mm+ picks or use it when your doing really heavy riffing.

and ofcos, dun be lazy lah. rock like a real bassist man! :smt035

cheers
