Another distortion to compliment my Boss BD2

Hi. I want to get a 2nd distortion pedal to compliment my Boss BD2. I would like one to be set with slight dirt and the other pedal to be on high gain for more distortion.

I am considering Digitech Bad Monkey. Any others I should consider? Please recommend.

TQ

The BD-2 is an overdrive, and so is the bad monkey... There's a difference between overdrive and distortion..

If its distortion you want, you might wanna try out a medium gain Boss DS-1 Distortion, its quite versatile from what I've heard. For high-gain, you can check out the Beta Aivin HM-200 Heavy Metal. Check the reviews section for my review and more info, or you can PM me!

The BD2 when gain cranked up to 4 / 5 o'clock sounds similar to distortion to me. Anyway I term it distortion because of the amount of dirt I get at this setting which is useful some times for my use. But when I need lower gain setting, I don't want to bend down to readjust gain / volume in between songs.

So I am hoping if anyone can recommend me a good OD / distortion pedal which can give me good clean boost and some dirt at low gain when required. The Digitech BM is cheap and is my choice but there's also the new Tonerider OD pedals. Are they available yet?

The other option I have is probably the BYOC mouse ( RAT clone ).

I have the BD-2 and SD-1. I find that the SD-1 compliments the BD-2 very well as a boost for the BD-2, it smoothens out the harshness of the BD-2 (at higher gain settings), and gives it alot of sustain. But the SD-1 colors ur tone and gives a very obvious mid hump which some people may not like.

You can never go wrong with the Bad Monkey using as a clean boost. SD-1's mid hump can also be beneficial in high gain solos to be heard in band settings.

I find the tone of Boss's overdrives warmer and more pleasant than that of the bad monkey though... More tube-like tone.

Yeah, sometimes the name Digitech has an implication that all there pedals are Digital eventhough Bad Monkey is pure analog. For BOSS overdrive, I would highly recommend OD3. Tons of Bass and gain for an overdive. I also personally use the Bad Monkey as a standalone drive on live setting so I know its capabilities and nuances too.

want to consider the TS9 i'm selling? Can also use together with the CS-3, which I also happen to be selling :P

Very true, DS-1 and BD-2 compliments each other very well. To get a wider range of dist, get a mod ds-1 if possible.

BB preamp is a good suggestion.

OD3 would also be a great choice. Feels like a BD-2 but sounds warmer with more mids, complements the BD-2 in a good way.

You can try the boss OS-2 out. not the most popular pedal around but you'll be surprised. It meant to produce a in-between overdrive and dist sound but u can also set it either way as well.

Buckethead's "Too many Humans" will be a gd ref. check the link below.Dont worry its a ballad haha.

The Boss BD2 is a great pedal, but gotta know how to use it 1st...
Taken from the BD-2 manual:
"The BD-2 is the overdrive that has been specifically designed for crunch distortion.
It can faithfully express the tone change caused by moving the knobs on the guitar.
It can create distortion that can faithfully reproduce the picking nuance of the player.
It can create wide varieties of distortions from crunch to hard distortion, by adjusting the
Gain Knob.Even if the Gain Knob is raised, a clean and natural sound can be produced by turning the volume of the guitar.
A natural-sounding overdrive continues to be produced"

Digitech BadMonkey ...
sounds quite nice on a SS amp ... but tends to mud out when plugged into a tube amp.
IMO: Digitech pedals were designed for SS amps.
1 thing i realy like about Digitech pedals is its bypass ... when the pedal is off.
having a digitech pedal (switched off) at the start of your chain does improve ur tone.

BOSS OD3 ...
Great pedal ...~! Fat and Thick overdrive...~!
i find i get a more bluesy sound out of this than the BD2.

back to topic,
given the BD2's distortion character and shrillness, it would stack quite well with a rat or turbo rat especially since the rat tends to sound abit muddy when the gain knob is turned up.

Perhaps you could tell us ur current setup, pedal and amp settings and the sound you are trying to attain for us to better recommend you a dist. pedal ?
