The big difference you'll notice between active and passive pickups is the way they sound in relation to your guitar's volume knob. With passive pups you'll lose more highs as you roll down the volume knob whereas with active pups because of the built in pre amp circuit within eg. EMGs you'll retain the original tone throughout the volume knob range. Passive pups are the sounds associated with Classic rock where players like Page, Hendrix, Van Halen used the volume knob like a tone knob. The active pups came into popularity in the late 70's into the 80's when rack systems and super session players wanted more tonal consistency from their volme knob. The active pup system also works better in long chains of pedals and racks. The passive pups have a certain charm some call mojo.

These days the choice of passive or active pup system is a matter of taste as players like Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Allan Holdsworth, Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, and Malmsteen use passive pups and players like David Gilmour, Zakk Wylde, Kirk Hamett, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather use active pups.

Among other things. The battery is there to power up the circuitry, which is doing things to the signal.

aye all of u forgot one thing....most common active pickups are EMGS....stuff foundin mostly ESPs and JAcksons.....

Davis sells them. 8)

emgs seem to lack those pole pieces found in 'regular' pups
are they like hidden beneath the cover?
or issit something else?
