A Sellout Band

What really defines a sellout band? Why are bands like Good Charlotte , Simple Plan , Greeday etc considered as sellout bands?

Good Charlotte became a sellout band to many when they made "We Believe" and "I Just Wanna Live". They just made poppy, mtv-friendly songs and called it "matured" punk.

Simple Plan were sellouts from the beginning. Their lyrics sound like the anthem of a suicide club.

Greendayapprently became sellouts when they made American Idiot. I personally have nothing against it, but some critics do.

when they drift from their initial way of playing and composing songs, to a style that is more radio friendly and which is able to garner more airplay and appeals to a larger crowd.

In short, changing from playing what YOU want to what the MASSES want. Of course you can argue that the band wants to take a different direction musically, but thats a large grey area

haha... sell outs or not... they seem to enjoy their lifestyles as musicians.
i guess thats what matters most. enjoying what you are doing. Getting paid alot of money for it is just a huge bonus.

they are catering to what the market wants ? entirely nothing wrong with that.

just that when juxtaposed to the immensely rich history of rock and roll of extremely talented , extremely brilliant and intensely great guitarists, bands and artistes . to say pale in comparison, is too complimentary for them.

Selling-out can't b applied to those bands mentioned coz they were already mainstream-friendly & were intending/intended to commercialise heavily when they started out. Thtz what all these kinda bands want anyway. Fame, wealth, cars, babes, luxury etc.

waitaminit ..

going by your defintion.

you are calling beatles , the beach boys , jimi hendrix , arthea franklin , Ray charles and elvis sell outs. think about it deeper.

k sell out bands is bands which at first produce this certain genre or style they play but then under influence of the masses or the record label they change their way of style. green day to me is not a sell out but they kinda turn into pussies...haha they have been playin the way they were from their first album... Good Charllotte or simple plan were never sellout they are manufactured...hahah they are actually boybands...shhhhhh

yep...BOYBANDS....they are juz there for the wealth, car, Wemen, mansions,fames...etc....

make music for the sake of music...not for fame and wealth....

No man. The thing is, sometimes ppl regard "selling out" as a bad thing bt for mainstream bands normally, selling-out is just plain commercialising, n therez nothing wrong with tht, itz music business. I mean they should nvr b associated with being sold-out. Howevr if a band is nt looking to cater to the masses, & it sorta sticks to one particular crowd only, & after having some huge success they go POOF! MTV! Ah..then their so-called original crowd might call em sell-outs. As u can see all views stated in this thread contributes to the meaning of a sell-out band.

Who cares whether it's a so-called sellout band, as long as you like the music can already. Even if you don't like, plenty of other pple will like.

Pier.

Bro cloudsky is right you know.

In the early years , the beatles were quite literally, manipulated by their record company to be sellouts.

you are taking a pretty closed minded approach on this discussion, and i dont think the "who cares" atititude will lead to further informative discussion

Hahah..at the time of the Beatles everything meant business. So money was a factor & getting to the masses was a must.

Nevertheless, The Beatles were excelllent songwriters/musicians.

They were really good at writing memorable tunes. :)
Plus they had great voices too.

But they were still sellouts lol
