Songs I play have been more to chugs, blasphemous-guitar-tone-destroying-soaked effect or feel than shred technicality and capacity. Would like to gain the skill, but there is no desire for it.

I applaud those who can shred. They mastered the many hours perfecting that craft. If I got song to do that needs shredding, I will call upon them expertise, so my answer is number four. :mrgreen:

it's fun to watch fingers fly but sometimes it serves no purpose other than to buttress one's ego.
mindless shredding should be made an extreme sport somewhat like the World's Fastest Drummer competition so that they can stop pretending to be musicians.

Shredding is like shitting.

You must have a reason to do it. And when you do it, please find a good spot to do so. Too much is no good - it makes you and possibly others feel sickly. None at all and you'll soon find that you will have issues.

hahaha. i agree totally! life is all about balance and you'll need shredding at times and with the ability to shred you'll balance music better.

shredding is kinda like rapping..

in a time frame, u have MANY words to say...so you say it really fast.

but not everyone can say it fast, articulately and melodiously. some may juz spout some lightning fast gibberish.

+1. shredding is not just about playing as fast as u can. the notes, when played together gotta make sense. i was kinda amazed when people here said many can shred.

No lah.

Otherwise, why do we say "good" shred? Or "boring" shred?

Shredding = just playing fast!

Quick, discussion on the meaning of Shredding!

shredding to me gets boring after awhile. and this is coming from a guy who listens to govan, saraceno, vai, mark whitfield, de meola and many the likes.

I rather experiment with effects and wierd experimental sounds rather than shred, exploring texture and feel on the tonal palette. Of course there's a guy who does this especially well. Mr. Buckethead himself :D

Shredding is about speed. It's about technique. Phrasing and melodies are not included.

Here's the Wikipedia definition:
Shred guitar or shred refers to lead electric guitar playing that relies heavily on fast passages; the act of playing fast passages on an electric guitar is termed ‘shredding’. It is not a musical definition but a fairly subjective cultural term used by guitarists and enthusiasts of guitar music. It is usually used with reference to rock and metal guitar playing, more so due to various other associated techniques (such as whammy bar ‘dive-bombs’ and tapping); however, it is sometimes used with reference to playing outside this idiom, particularly country, jazz fusion and blues
