I bought this:
Schaller Sure Claw, fits Floyd Rose, Strat Tremolo - eBay (item 110250745448 end time May-17-08 07:15:10 PDT)
Out of curiosity and after doing some research.
Seemed to make a TON of sense - the old way of having a trem claw with screws parallel with the springs, screwed into a WOODEN body, just seemed flawed. The Sure Claw is screwed in perpendicular - so there's less likely-hood of wearing out the screw holes. That's a big enough plus for me.
Installed. Easy - no need to drill in my case, just use a small screw and progressively get bigger. *NOTE the warning on the ebay page about the middle pup, I just used a shorter wood screw*
Ah... nice! Additional findings:
1) There's less warble to the sound now. Notes are more bold sounding.
2) Flutter has been reduced a notch.
3) Diving/Pull-ups feel more even - like instead of the trem claw and springs moving, its now only the springs moving.
I think there's a slight increase in low end and (lesser for) midrange. I think sustain has increased a little too.
A worthy worthy worthy investment! If not to ensure peace of mind with regards to stripping screw holes!
