re: Opinion..
Hi, i attended Deafcon 3 and i have to say, it was a real eye-opener..
though it was my first time attending the third offering of this 'hopefully' regular gig fixture, it was a great experience for me..
A total of six acts performed, 5 rock bands and a hip hop duo performance..
Here's a breakdown of my opinions on each band..
1) The November Iris
Great vocalist, reminded me of Jay Forrest from Hopesfall..
the clarity in his voice is like second to none..
Great guitars; the duo were great..
The bassist was really into the groove, he did backing vocals as well; great!
however, cldn't really hear the drums.. but im sure he'll be up to the mark, the next time they perform.. yeah!!
2) Bedroom Utensils.
The guitarist, the one with the 'Jackass' t-shirt and bassist were reely passionate.. great professionals..
3) Rapscallion.
This duo was like a breath of fresh air, cos they performing their songs wanted me to get on stage and join in the mic chat.. think the whole(mic check 1-2, yeah yeah, etc..)
they had a lot of guts doing what they did and i have to say, their message really drove into the audience.. They're bent on bringing hip-hop back..
4)Firebrands.
When this band performed their first single, 'Scarecrow and the Fire', i was totally blown away by them.. i remember the vocalist of the band sayin that this was a revamped version of that single which they had come up with, in the studio, the day before..
in all honesty, what a hell of a version.. these guys knew how to build up the song.. beautiful, simply beautiful..
The drummer for this band, really showed the drummers of the first two bands, how drums really should be played.. i mean it, he was great.. he really was..
The entire line up packed in a hell of a knock-out.. i remember during the initial stages of their set, the lead singer wanted time to set-up and the bassist started playing this really solid bass line.. ha, it was great!
this band is set for greater things.. cldn't be further from the truth..
5) Trella..
This band is one hell of a band.. honestly, i've never seen such a solid band whose members appear so comfortable with each other..
The vocalist, guitars and bassist were really into it, and it was such a joy to watch them..
they interacted with the audience and that was a really cool gesture..
and yeah, the drummer was awesome.. like bigtime.. think the technicalities of Josh Freese and the passion of Dave Grhol combined..
SOLID!
6) Bad Obsession..
in all honesty, this band really got the crowd going.. i've never been a fan of their kind of music, but i realised that when u are open to new stuff, u begin to enjoy it.. this was one such instance.. once again, great vocalist and strings crew.. Drummer was really thumping the drums and i suppose his signature move was to point his drumstick vertically into the air, ala Kris Kohls from Adema.. a joy to watch..
The lead singer from Firebrands, took over hosting duties as the one who was scheduled to do so had some urgent family commitments..
the former was great, very polite and hilarious at time.. haha..
He shld consider hosting too, u never know.. yeah!
with two sudden passings' withing the local music community, it is indeed hard to stomach.. Deafcon 3 was the perfect platform to pay tribute to the late Mr Wayne Thunder.
The lead singer of Firebrands and the guitarist from Bad Obsession teamed up and did a beautiful acoustic version of the critically acclaimed single 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd.. Admirable, in a time like this..
That song was last performed in a tribute show for the 9/11 victims.. Pink Floyd and Fred Durst did the honours..
Also, the solid drummer from Firebrands, played the keyboard and sang a song, with the intention to motivate one of his friends to realise her musical aspirations and not give up, easily.. Extremely encouraging..
oh well, what a night..
anyone needs a drummer?
msg me..
Krist..
