2 sound cards?

hey guys,

i just bought a midi controller and the m-audio audiophile 192 sound card yesterday and i was wondering if i could use 2 sound cards in my computer? i'm currently using a creative sound card in my computer...

the reason why i'm doing this is because i dont have any speakers to hook up to my audiophile, so i thought of using my present cambridge soundwork speakers connected to my creative sound card for audio output and my audiophile for midi in from my midi controller....

would there be a conflict when i boot my system up?

thanks for any answers, greatly appreciated... :D :D

then u don't need the creative sound card in there at all. make use of the audiophile to output audio and input midi.

in any case, having 2 sound cards is not a problem. u can always go to device manager to disable or enable one or both. then u can also choose which soundcard u want to use for audio output and audio input under "control panel -> sounds and audio devices".

hi thanks for the reply....however i still have some questions... :?

oh the computer will configure for me? i don't have to do any manual changing of IRQ(i think that's what it's called) or stuff like that??

sorry if its very noobish..haha...don't know much about such things...

I don't recommend using 2 soundcards of different brands. Sometimes, there may be driver conflicts, not just IRQ. In any case, you really don't need the creative sound card. Easier to just hook up the cambridge to your audiophile. Getting adapters is much easier than to sort out drivers problems.

Some people do use 2 soundcards - but those that I heard of are of the same brand and even same model to increase no. of i/o. When that happens, you do have to check the IRQ to make sure there are no conflicts. Quite easy - in the control panel/systems, just make sure they don't share the same IRQ. If they do, just re-assign one of them to another IRQ.

ic...would i be able to find these in sim lim? cos i'll be going there to get my midi cable tomorrow...or do i have to go citymusic/sinamex....

yeah won't be a problem finding the adaptors that u will need in sim lim.

as for midi cable.. u might wanna go to a music shop to get them.

You can try using 2 soundcards. If there are no conflicts, whether you can use 2 is also dependant on the audio sequencer you're using. IIRC ASIO specs say you can only select one while wdm can use both.

sorry but is it hard to get them at sim lim? i did a search and someone suggested getting them at sim lim thats why i thought it would be easier to get them there...

sim lim might not be easy to find midi cable. another thing, measure the length you need before going down. it is better to get longer than just nice coz if you need to move your set up around, you will not be limited by the cable.

eh, i hope im not too late.....

but anyway, i know which store at sim lim sells midi cables!! the first floor lol!!

I still remembered splittin up with my group of friends and goin from store to store on every level to find one when one of my friends found it on the first floor.

Im not sure of the store's name but it is the store which have keyboards and turntable mixers displayed at the front of the store and it is located near one of the entrances. It cost me 12 bucks when i bought it but im not sure of its length tho....cuz it doesnt matter much to me anyway.

Hope that helped!

haha its abit late...got my stuff from citymusic yday...went to the cable shop(3rd floor) in SLS but they didn't sell any midi cables...

anyway it's still useful for future reference if people need to know where else they can get midi cables...
