ze flight of ze bumble beez

i listen to lots of music, from chinese ballads to black metal. But somehow, I just prefer Petrucci's Bumblebee to the orchestra version.

Don't take it personally ya? :p

you know, i think pettrucci's version is really better than the rest. It really sound like the flight of a bumble bee.

Maksim just makes it sound like flight of a tinkerbell fairy..

No lah. Juz that sometimes, a piece of music is written with a certain theme in mind. Hence, the composer will leave notes in the score like "Cresendo... pf..pp...fff..moderato.." all all those, so that the intepretation of the song can be accurate.

Not that Petrucci is "poor" but the song is specifically written for orchestra work; the electrical guitar is unable to capture the essentence fully. Maxsim is worse..I think his version really really blows... but ok lah, he does have alot of technical skill, I still feel the piano doesn't bring out this song as well.

I believe you are talking about phrasing. I agree that Petrucci's version lacks phrasing. Constant volume and attack all the way. It probably takes away from the meaning of the composition. I do recommend Troy Stetina's version of Bumblebee, from his book 'Speed Mechanics'. He plays that piece with great phrasing, and injects much feel in the piece. Not saying that Petrucci can't, but he just didn't apply it.

Something like that. It's about alot about dynamics and timbre as well. The electrical guitar tends to have this "twang" to it, being after all, a plucked instrument.

There are portions in the song where the idea is to recreate the sound of a bumble bee buzzing around, like flying past your ears, it really takes the lyre type instruments to bring out the piece (pp < cresendo... > diminish)

I feel the main idea of this song is not really the speed, but the technique placed in recreating the sounds of a workaholic bumble bee, although speed is a necessity, it should not be a focus.
