Your take on LESPAUL vs SG

u need to hear a Proper Les Paul and a SG. pickups will not get you that tonal shift from an SG to exactly what a les paul sounds like.

They are 2 different guitars. Each has its own tone.

LP and SG:
I just have a chance to test SG re'61 and 3 LP standard last week
- why re'61... becasue it's the only sg in the shop i visited. Most people here (Thailand) affirm that re'61 is so much better than SG standard.
SG re'61:
Feather- easy to play neck, light weight, and as those of you said.. disappoint neck strap placement but it fit for this model.. but it causes the neck a bit fall when carry it because the neck is heavier than the body.
Sound- Bright, clear, thick. The neck pickup is still clear and bright. Middle position is nice or pop player and bridge pickup is very versatile for rhythm or lead in any type of music u play. I will not wonder if I found one play SG in a pop band and ahother was playing a trash metal riff. SG give you those sound.
Lespaul Standard:
Feather- a bit fatter neck (anyway it's upto what kind of neck '50s or '60s); so much heavier than SG; and feeling of smart as Zakk Wylde when carrying it.
Sound- Very thick and Bright at neck pickup. Solo with distortion (at a good amp) could hold your 3 pieces rock band without rhythm part. Middle and Neck position is a bit dim. Anyway, you could use Middle position for rhythm on pop songs (maybe at solo part if you find the neck pickup is too punchy). Using neck pickup and a bit adjusted tone knob, you could get a standard jazz sound.

I hate to tell you that it is too hard to decide which one is better. SG give you a compromising sound mass (not too thick comparing to lespaul and not too thin comparing to fender) but its tone maybe a bit tough by mahogany body piece. While Lespaul give you a sweeter tone but uncompromising sound mass.

The need of sound mass

hey

hey this is a good topic...

i own a LP myself and compared to the SG which i've played few times i find my likes and dislikes

SG
- strange strap button placement
- only one volume knob for both pickups and the tone switch is all the way at the bottom
- easy access to higher frets
- different feeling when trying to mute strings
- looks more hard rock or metal
- more high and mid range tones for like more rock and lead riffs.

LP
- classic strap button placement
- seperate volume and tone knobs for each pickup and easy access for switch so you can turn the volume down on one pickup and flipping it back and forth at desire :D cool
- looks really classy 8)
- (me being both lead and rhythm in my band) i find changing from treble to rhythm (Lead to rhythm tone) is easier cause the switch is at the top.
- more low and mid range tones and especially for the rhythm tone you get a great blues and jazzy sounding guitar like BB King

basically what im trying to say i love the LP more...its personal preference...
but i also find when you boost your amps volume more than the gain the rhythm tone on the LP gives you quite a good sort of tube overdrive sound which i find great!!!

i find my LP gives me a great sound for the genres i play which are rock n roll, blues, jazz and funk... thnx for reading

only one volume knob?
then that's something new. 3 knobs on a SG.

i would take the SG.
LP is too heavy for me to jump here and there =X
Fret access is restricted.
Pickup switch is on top, which i prefer it to be bottom.
LP bigger body so it delivers a different feel from playing, which i prefer a thinner and small body.

his is more like blind fan worship

the sg, definitely. the strap button placement is alright once you get used to it. you get easier access to the high frets. it's super light, a lp would kill your back. nicer tone for soloing (more mids?). and the pickup selector is at the bottom so it's really convenient compared to the lp. dont really understand why fiercelilbadger finds switching easier when the switch is at the top!

well ok.
i have 2 Gibson SGs.
and 2 LP copies, a epiphone LP custom and a samick LP.

both are totally different.
obviously sound is different, but with the right pickups can do anything.

wont bother with all the stuff ppl know.
but main difference imo is this.
neck location.
the SG neck is further out, joins body at 19th fret.
LP neck joins body at 16th fret.
so playing standing up or sitting down both feel different, especially sitting down.
for me the LP when sitting down feels more comfortable on left leg.

like i said its personal prefference...its like a right-handed person saying "i dont know how those left-handed people write with left hand" and vice versa. btw i am left handed but i play "right-handed guitar". i dont know why they call it a right-handed guitar when only right hand is strumming. i consider it to be left handed cuase all the more difficult fingering takes plays with your left. get it? unless your left handed then you use your right hand for the fingering and left for strumming...

is this confusing???
