YOUR EARS ARE YOUR LIVELIHOOD; PROTECT THEM NOW, KEEP MAKING GREAT MIXES LATER

It all started with the EQ. He found himself reaching for the highs, trying to add back that sizzle his mixes seemed to be missing. At home, he started jacking up the volume on his phone, and then his iPod. During band practice, he was always asking the guys to repeat themselves; then his girlfriend began complaining that he never listened anymore. It wasn't until his ears started ringing that he finally made an appointment with an audiologist, but by then, the damage was done. He is a young, dynamic engineer on the verge of breaking into the big time and he has profound, irreversible hearing loss. He is 28 years old.

great article..but may I ask. when wearing earplugs...I usually go out of time playing..and that sucks..can someone tell me a way to overcome this?

it shud..well my diagnosis of ur problem is that..u lose your timing..so i guess one way to improve ur timing is to practise with a metronome..

i guess its a matter of getting used to it, as well as getting a good pair of earplugs. the etymotics are by far the best i've used so far, so a massive +1000000 to that. i even wear them to gigs and to clubs... sometimes feel a bit awkward + lame but ok la embarrassment is a small price to pay for preserving my precious hearing. great post mr soft!

where can I get the Etymotics? please tell! and I lose timing not because I don't train..goshhhh..I mean,I can't hear the drums that well and even myself..coz when I use the earplugs everything goes muddy and muffled..understand? is there anyway to combat this? or is metronome still the solution?

You gotta pick out other things in the mix when you use earplugs to keep time. It sounds like you are used to hearing things with high frequencies to do your job. Just keep trying and you'll get used to it.

yeah I guess I'm just used to following the loud sounds..

urmm thanks...I'll try it..

anyways, those Etymotic doesn't muffle the sounds?! someone tell me where I can get it please!

kerplunk - you aren't a gonner... but you're on your way. the ringing is indicative of some level of hearing damage and loss... if i am not wrong

aenimic - well i guess its really a matter of practice and getting used to earplugs... before etymotics i used some cheapo hush-a-foam from guardian pharmacy. jon chan from plain sunset and me used to use this years ago. it cut of all the high end, we could barely hear the bass and drums, but it worked. using etymotics was like, moving from mono to dolby 5.1 surround. relatively speaking of course. i wont guarantee it wil make you play better, but i can guarantee you will hear everyone better.

I started to wear earplugs after I saw almost all the drummers I played with used ear plugs! Maybe I'm lucky but it really helped, I can hear my instrument definitely much clearer ( bass) . However, it's true that certain high-freq stuff like guitars or vocals might sound muffled. I really need to get a good pair of earplugs. What do you guys suggest, something that can be bought in S'pore!

question! if i put on year plucks how do i hear music?

i used to hear ringing sounds after playing pokemon for prologned periods. this was a few years back even before i started to play the guitar X= what does thismean?

i see a lot of drummers wearing ear plugs. i guess its ok to take them off during gigs. if your live revolves around going to the jamming studio and recieving those loud sounds nearly daily then earplugs would really be a good investment

i use creative ep-630. Blocks out alot of stuff. Makes me look like an idiot when my hp rings and i cant hear it cos of the noise isolation.
