Direct Drive for me...... So far.. Modded mine for asymmetrical.. Used to have the Jackhammer, but it lost out to a pedal I built myself which in turn lost out to the Rutt from Kimjawblahblahblah..
For me, I use a ProCo RAT 2 on my Valbee.
I must say, the RAT is really unique and transparent!
Ranges from mild bluesy overdrive to heavy chugga-chugga
Works well with my bass too! Wierd, huh?
The RAT 2 is gonna be staying with me for a long time!
P.S. I think a tone knob fix would be good for it though..
From the words of the master:
"The MD2 mod is a custom stack type. This is based on the pedal's unique dual gain stage controls which allows the user to explore the characteristics of pre and post gain like that of a tube amp design. The stock version was overly compressed which may sound fine in low settings and useable in soft levels from a small practice amp. The MD2 custom stack mod combines different clipping characteristics from a wide choice of diode and opamp combos and a careful re tweak of the eqs at the pre and post distortion section. This results in a much fuller sounding and more dynamic overall character from the pedal."
Heh, I think the MD2 is quite an interesting hybrid design among the newer analog pedals from Boss. I think it should also be pointed out that stock pedals can sound good by themselves too ya. I would recommend that since Boss among other brands offers such a wide range of drive pedals from mild to way out there it's best to try 'em out to find what suits you for the time being based on what you currently enjoy listening, playing your other complementing gear and budget. In this modern day of wide choices there's surely something for everyone along the way. Cheap or expensive, analog, digital, stock, modded, boutique or what not as long as the tool(s) inspires one to play with inspiration is really what matters most. Quality of Tone and Timbre are quite similar but really quite different.
