protection is important...but most of the time i think it's the "cool" factor that makes people willing to fork out extra cash

Cool in terms of aesthetics and branding i would think

yup, water proof, dun wan buy 200 dollar bag dat in the end cant protect the guitar or bass in it when it rains..

$200 is a bit too much for a soft case with the basic protection.
but i would pay that amount for a hardcase with gadgets like humidifier.
looks are also important... high class leather sounds good..

I've got 2 basic requirements for a gigbag
- Good quality material - leather or otherwise. for that amount it better last long.
- Lightweight - we're going to carry this around afterall. This is where I feel the Spork lacks a bit. It's a heavy duty and a heavy gigbag. Makes it a bit of a pain to carry around.

If it's possible to get a lightweight and well padded, longlasting, I'm sure it would sell.

A key factor that has been identified throughout this thread is the weight of the gigbag. With the Incase & similar offerings, protection is good, but weight is compromised. Used to own an Incase & a Spork, but both were too heavy for me - with everything stuffed in, it pretty much felt like I was carrying a hardcase but with a cushy handle. Of course, I could strap them to my back, unlike a hardcase. I've been hunting around, and haven't found any gig bag that offers the same level of protection as the Incase AND is significantly lighter. Today, I still use my $33 gig bag from Esden Music - cheap and usable. It does compromise on protection though.

I'd pay $200 for a top of the range carbon fibre case (as someone mentioned here earlier), in the likes of a TRIC case for acoustic guitars. I don't think there can be a traditionally-padded gig bag that can offer high levels of protection without being too heavy. I'd love to own one if it existed, of course. :)

I personally think that for the purpose of a gig bag, extensive amounts of protection is just redundant. You're carrying it on your back and shouldn't be travelling in too harsh a condition. So why would you require such a heavily protected bag?

If the guitar is to travel through harsh conditions, long flights etc, hardcase is the way to go, and in this case, portability isn't really an issue since i don't think many will be travelling through harsh and long distances on foot.

With the gig bag strapped to your back, the only thing that can damage your guitar is probably a freak accident. Average, simple gig bags already can serve its function as protection imo.

A highly protective and portable gig bag is impractical to produce and is overdoing the requirements of a gig bag.

This is my personal opinion and is not directed personally at anybody. Peace!

What about the Tribal Planet gig bags? Seems like they are not as heavy. (and cheaper too)

Lets do some analysis... haha...

1. Headstock
Should have a neck support, so angled headstocks such as the Les Paul have adequate "space". Internal material surrounding the area in contact with the tuning heads, nut, and strings must be slightly stronger woven, to prevent scractching off the internal material (longer case life).

2. Neck
If there is a neck brace to have the guitar stay in place (not moving side to side or up and down or other awkward movements), having the guitar snug even when you're running after the god damned train / bus. Probably has something to do with the dimensions of the case, to hold it snug as well. With all the spare space around the neck, possible to have some little pockets to store maybe patch cables, secret stash of cigs, or whatever people can think of (no, I don't smoke).

3. Body
I think people would prefer a specified case to fit body dimensions of the guitar, snug. But this might take a toll on production costs etc. Dunno how you're gonna handle this... But having a one fit all is great. My Les Paul can sit in hardcase while I use the gigbag to carry my strat for gigs instead. Having sufficient padding on both the sides, front, and back of the guitar will be nice. I've noticed that memory foam type of thingy for my laptop case is really good, can absorb significant amounts of impact, while keeping my laptop snug. (laptop case is called zero something...)

4. Strap button
Most cases don't have this, and I feel this is a great addition seen in Chern's Spock. Having support for the strap button at the base is great in preventing knocking as we put down our guitars.

5. Additional features.
I know some people (like me), are rather minimalistic, so we don't have pedal cases, but would like to have the case to hold a pedal or two, cables, strings, tuning device/tuner. Having a laptop sleeve is also great, since some people do bring their macbooks to studio recordings or other stuff (hey, some of us are still within the educational bracket...)

Waterproofing is also a great addition. Considering its not exactly all sunshine here in Singapore. Also noted people like plush material for the rest of the interior of the case, but I'm not really picky, so as long as its cushy and comfy for my guitar thats fine.

6. User customisability
I'm surprised nobody mentioned this. But I'm a person who likes to have a wee bit of control of options on my bags. (I use a timbak2, heavily modified with strap padding, carabinas for my mp3) Having some add-on options will be nice. Such as having the straps in those clip on types, so I can sling / backpack my case, and of course hand carrying too.

Having additional things such as mp3 pouches as optional extras is a nice touch to user friendliness (some of us don't have SUPER long earphone/headphone cables to stretch from the laptop sleeve to our ears). Or things such as a little pouch to put whatever etc. (house keys) in.

Yeah, my 2 cents worth...

1. Super good protection for guitar or bass(so wont spoil if accidentally knock while going up trains or bus)
2. Comfortable to the shoulders
3. Can customize or design own gigbag
4. The pouch to put accesories cannot like protude out like some gigbags out there.
5. Lightweight and waterproof.
6. Must be damn soft so can sleep on it if no pillow.

so thats about it aahahaah

Cool in terms of aesthetics and branding i would think

yea...

imo, 200 for a gigbag might be a little too much unless its really cool or beautiful (leather comes to mind). As mentioned, I also feel that just sufficient protection will do. Something that will protect it against rain and some knocking around while traveling. I personally do not like putting things in the gigbag since the bass itself is heavy enough. I can't imagine carrying a gigbag stuffed with cables, strap, pedals, and a laptop.. lol. Moreover, additional protection is needed to protect these stuff (esp. laptops) which I think will add on to the weight.

Being customizable is nice, though, have to weigh it against the extra factory cost?

Look at the RDM Spork for inspiration.. That is the definition of an extremely good gigbag, if not the best!

Yes I would pay 200 bucks for a great gig bag.

I emphasize the word Great.

Why would you place your 2k plus or even more guitar in a 50 dollar gigbag?

The rdm spork is great, but the design imho could be better thought out, the hooks in the strap press against my back when I carry the bag, causing loads of discomfort. Other than that it's pretty darn good, and Cherns is a joy to deal with.

[=SoulJah

My sentiments exactly.. 200 for a very well-designed INCASE bag, maybe even personalised, is a good deal.. If its those flimsy types, no thanks!

Nope, i would rather use a hard case. A semi hard case from gator is about 100 bucks. Of cause im only using monetary values to conlude this

What about padding that can be inflated / deflated with a small fist-sized pump?
My leg "air-cast" comes with this feature LOLz (and it costs >$200)

Just another one of my silly ideas.

I think its really nice to have the interior like super soft and gentle!. like wool!
aha hmm.. but ithink to make it to reach $200..
hmm how about BULLETPROOF gigbag.made out of dragonskin armour
or maybe carbon fibre too to make it FIREPROOF.

aha. but lol its really cool to have these features but my $50 gigbig works pretty well!

eh but 200 can alrdy can you a hardcase wad, so might as well buy a hardcase. Heavy as shit i know, but "BE A MAN"- quote russell peters
