Worst Gig/Jamming experience

Hey ya'll!! Just wanted to start this so we can all share our worst experiences.

I'll start the ball rolling.

This happenned about a year ago, when me and my band were jamming at a studio(whose name I shall keep classified). So starting off, we were 20mins late, and the guy would'nt let us have extra time, even though there was no bookings after us. So we had no choice but to go with it. After jamming for like 10 mins, the cymbal stands kept falling apart(literally). Every 5 mins the guy would come in and fix it up. The worse part of this story was, we were all so broke till we ended up drinking water from the tap in the toilet(it was clean, of course).

Anyone else wanna share their stories?

Well being late is already your fault so thats alright.. The cymbal stands, well i guess the jamming sutdio sucks tahts all..

my whole band and i went to katong shopping center, then realised that fyewerkz wasn't there anymore. we ended up playing dota at asteroids :?

technically it isn't a worst experience bcos we didn't even get 2 jam :P

performance-wise my worst experience was when a band of mine flopped a cover of a difficult now-mainstream power metal song. and with my first band, when all went well..on the real day the vocalist lost control & the song sounded horrible. now jamming-wise, when the first time i jammed i knew nuts & everything was nothing. that was real bad.

One of our gig, the setup was kind of like not working.

There isn't sustain at all when we do a pull off or hammer on.

So whenever I do a legato phrase, it's virtually muted. So I was like a clown
moving my fingers and no sound come out. Not to make things worse,
another subsequent gig we had, we saw the same setup, and I was like "oh no....!!"

Hmm.

I had one relatively bad overall experience. If these guys are reading this, this is not an attack, but just a recount of my experience (or as I had remembered it), I have no intention of flaming you guys (although I might have to admit that I will KPKB).

I had approached a guy on this forum who was looking for lead singer. Since my band at that point in time not really working, I decided to give this band a try. He was the lead guitarist, and he told me that they wanted to do a few songs, namely GnR, RHCP and AC/DC. I asked him if they wanted me to sing ONLY (because I play guitar also mah), he said it's ok... just learn the songs and sing only.

I added him on msn, and we chatted. I did the routine thing of asking more in-depth details on who the band members were, and turned out they all below 16 years old. I was thought to myself *okaaaayyy...*

During conversation on msn, I asked him (lead guitarist) about his playing experiences, but he tended to gravitate towards talk on what gear he had, how fantastic his guitar teacher was and anything but how well he could perform as a guitarist. And during those conversations I discovered that everyone in that band had less than one year and a half's worth of playing experience. In other words, they were noobs. But the guy said they could play fairly well. I decided to give them the benefit of doubt, and soon settled on a set list (4 songs: Sweet Child o Mine, Welcome to The Jungle, Highway to Hell, Californication) and a timeslot to jam.

On the day we were supposed to jam, the lead guitarist asked me to meet them at 4pm although the jam started at 5pm. I said ok, because I was under the impression they wanted to chat or makan or whatever. So I met him at City Hall at 4pm, maybe I was slightly late I forgot. But we walked to G77 to meet up the rest of the band. Turns out the bassist was having his bass evaluated by Beez at G77 for a possible pickup replacement. So there I was, carrying my laptop and bag (I had come from school) and standing around waiting for them to finish. I shook hands with the rhythm guitarist, said hi to the drummer and the bassist almost completely ignored me. I was kinda turned off by his behaviour, but I chose to stick to waiting.

Eventually, we went off to 4tones, where they proceeded to 'set-up'. I found myself being fascinated by the fact that out of the whole band, only the lead guitarist bothered to bring his own instrument (except bassist who had sent his bass to be repaired). So the jam started, and the band played, I sang. Now I have to admit these guys were noobs, so I couldn't expect too much of them but man it was just so... irritating:

Lead guitarist: overplays waaaay too much. Also over-usage of effects. During 'welcome to the jungle' he stopped halfway and the rest of the band inquired, to which he replied: "Oh I haven't finished learning the song".

And there I was, listening to the song over and over again before the jam to get the vocal style right.

Rhythm guitarist: likes to pose whle playing. It had no effect on his performance, but it sure gave him that 'guitar sticking out of crotch' look.

Bass player: over-ambitious. tries to play the studio's bass low-slung, in the end cannot reach and thus playing affected. Has the gall to ask me to sing with more energy.

Hello, I was at school doing my 3rd-year project. I'm tired, and I'm not exactly inspired by the band's performance.

Drummer: not too bad, but somehow gave me the impression that he wasn't interested in the song choice.

Overall: can play 60% tight, but songs are affected due to lack of musicianship.

Another factor was that they booked 4tones for 2 hours, and gave me a song list of 4 songs. Obviously the number of songs hard to fill 2 hours right? In the end, i took over on guitar for a while, and we managed to do more songs with the lead guitarist doing the vocals (not a good job, btw).

In the end, I was tired, fed up with wasting my time. I paid my money and walked away with a goodbye. Sorry to take so long reiterating this experience, and once again: no offense guys, just an honest recount.

my worst jamming experience is at a particular studio(not to mention the name)...

- the amps were old and worn off so badly that when u juz touch the knob lightly the volume boost is like 3 times the volume 1st heard
- sparks on the mic for a few times
- wiring of the room is everywhere

although my band manage to jam but it was very uncomfortable... that's my worst exp

my worst gig experience....

there was once i join this band as a rhythm guitarist, they were my 1st band.... we were performing a open stage, somewhere orchard if i didn't remember wrongly.....

well we started off well until abt the last few songs when the lead guitarist string snap(he was told to change the strings before the gig, coz his guitar strings were damn rusty, but he didn't change)..... after this song... he was lucky to hv bought 2 guitar that day, but guess what the same thing happen for the same reason.... this time was the last 2nd song.... the lead guitarist don't hv anymore guitar alrdy, so he had to borrowed it from the next band....

the gig organizer were quite pissed off, other musicians form other bands watch and shake their heads....

and guess what after the gig the lead guitarist got the guts to blame the rest of the rest of the band for not being able to react to the situation.....

i got pissed off and left the band... and eventually the band broke up.....

I joined this band last year for the purpose of entering in the Yamaha Asian Beats contest. B4 we started playing, I noticed my guitar volume was very soft. I could barely hear anything at all. I told the guitar tech and he said its normal. I was like huh? I cant hear anything, man! My other guitarist was also having the same problems too. I told the guitar tech again but he insisted it was fine. Then the moment I started playing, it was so damn soft.

Then everything went downhill after tat. Timing`s wrong and all and thus we cock up. After our so-called performance, my guitarist and I confronted the judges and asked why is the guitar volume so soft. Judges said sumthing like we dun judge u by ur skills but how u guys gel together as a band. What kinda answer is tat? Of coz, everyone has to hear each other in the band in order to gel together. I later found out from my fren who also played in the contest complained tat the sound system was damn terrible but his band made it to the next round and eventually finished 2nd place towards the end of the contest. Our band not surprisingly didnt make it to the next round.

Maybe most of u might remember my story..I posted it b4 here..oh well, my 1st public stage performance ended up in tatters.

iiiiiiiiiiii tripped on my cable, guitar flies, drop, dragged 1m away from me, pick it up, half of the paint gone, chipped badly. what else is there to say?

If any of you guys were at Music Against Drug 2004, you will definately know whats the worst gigging experience that I had...

Jam wise, playing with ppl that never learn their songs...

EURASIANCOMMUNITYHOUSE

i'm quite a noob la.
but i must say the eurasian community house stuff sucked.
firstly the snare sounded like thom( however you spell it XP)
then the cymbal chipped til can be use as the circular saw to cut wood
then my cable cock up... heh my fault.
they gave me the cable also cock up.
the stock bass just blew me away. Rusting and cannot play.
8O no way am i goin to ech again. EVER. XD

oh the worst one was like going to this certain jamming studio only to find out that the drums were really bad (can't adjust) and the rates were quite high. very disappointed. went there a second time when they claimed to be open but they were closed when we reached. never went there again. found out it moved later on.

worst kind of jams are with people who complain and whine about anything and everything and treat jamming as a chore, even if the jam was ok. just horrible to jam or hang around complaining and moody people. super discouraging. yup that's about it

My worst gig experience is to:

1) Rehearse 2 times per week for 2 weeks just for 1 song that's going to open an event

2) Have a perfect sound check

3) During actual event, the sound man forget to on the channel for the electric violin (We were performing a Vanessa Mae number)

Imagine the embrassment on stage.......

Yes many, many nitemare gigs .....

1. BATTLE OF THE BANDS RAINBOW 1997 semi finals - guitar cable sorted out (coughing guitar sound) and keyboards had problem so much so that the keys part for Journey's seperate ways sounded like BBC world service bells intro - + kena BOO BIG TIME by predominately blood thirsty crowd!

2. TALENTIME (SBC) SEMI FINALS - soloist - the SBC Combo EFF up my song CHALAT-CHALAT - LIVE ON NATIONAL TV! Paiseh & pissed off to the max!

3. TALENTIME (SBC) SEMI FINALS GROUP - lead guitarist amp blown - very very oft and keyboards no sustain pedal ... paiseh once again on LIVE NATIONAL TV!

4.WEDDING GIG about 2 years back - had asthma attack & had to do the 3 sets anyway - nearly collapsed on stage but had to soldier on!

5. BATTLE OF THE BANDS (DXO) FINALS 2005
BAD BAD BAD Sound mix and whole band was too tired coz we went for Thai massage just before the finals.... all sleepy & panchit

the saga continues....

Worst gig..

Other guitar player in the band just shoots straight into intro for song without allowing us to consider monitor levels.. Big mistake.

Had to go through 2 songs with hardly any good feedback before we could get him to stop and adjust monitors.

Could have smashed a pedal in his face..
