Who made you pick up a guitar?

When i was fourteen, I din't know what is a guitar or never really thought of learning any musicial instruments. I went for a church camp during one school holiday and get to see the church bands. They just strum and sing... i don't really like it and thought that guitars can only be played this way.
At night during the camp when we have some time, we sit around with some people holding guitars in their hands. It was the first time a see a guitar being played fingerstyle! I was fascinated by the instrument instead of the player. I tried it and immediately, I can sense a familiar feeling. Cant really describe it in words but i can only say that my fingers just know how to pluck the strings in the "correct" way. I believe some of you might know what i'm talking about. Now that i'm a teacher, i realised many students need to "learn" the so called correct plucking position.
You know what talking me??

Randomly decided to start learning... that was when I was 12 years old. Started on the acoustic guitar, and until now I'm still primarily an acoustic guitarist (even though I also play the electric). For me, nothing has bonded better with me than the acoustic guitar.

I suppose I didn't have any idols at that time. Just liked the sound of the acoustic guitar very much after hearing it at church. Then a few years down the road, started on electric to broaden my versatility.

So yeah, that's how I started...

Not a big name like most of the people in this but this man did inspire me after I saw him live for the first time two years ago. I was (and still am) a big fan of his for a few years but after that one performance, it told me, 'You should stop playing the air guitar and do something about it.'

i think back in the day it was Dave Baksh from Sum41 and Billiejoe, but of course that was only what got me going, i still love them and their material but i've moved on to heavier stuff

but im pretty sure it was Dave that got me going...

Kim Thayil of Soundgarden and Tom Morello of RATM.

Then I kinda have tons more guitarist that I really hail as inspirations. But those two are the ones that started me off. I still can't play like them though =(

Pardon my ignorance, but who is this?

Looks like a Japanese Jimmy Page!

Looks like a Japanese Jimmy Page!

His name is Yoshiki Fukuyama (福山芳樹). He does mainly songs that are featured in Japanese anime, known as anison. He broke into the scene as the singing voice of a character in the Macross franchise, as well as lead guitar for the band that provided the songs by Fire Bomber.

The video I'm linking is sort of his own Stairway to Heaven-inspired (IMHO) piece, complete with the double neck SG. The sound quality is a bit poor though.

Personally, I think he is more Brian May, rather than Jimmy Page, though Malmsteem (the hair) has been brought up by a friend before.

Here's more info on the man: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiki_Fukuyama
