Well, under mikemann's prompt to start a new thread, together with my curiosity, let's have a look at what Softies think and wanna be.

hmm...why isn't there the 'Both' option?
On the one hand, I love gigging and making people rock out, and on the other, I enjoy sitting at home practicing technique and improvising(I really suck), or just plain noodling.

Well cos if you're looking at this with the tone perspective, how demanding you are of your gear reflects on what you actually do as a guitarist. Naturally a bedroom guitarist wouldn't demand as much as someone who gigs on a frequent basis in front of a live audience, where the pressure to produce and keep a consistent tone is.

Well maybe i didn't make that clear :(

I see...didn't know this question was about tone.
But anyway, it IS possible for a bedroom guitarist to be very exacting when it comes to tone. I am one such example. All the cash I save is splurged on new pedals to experiment with.

Thtz me too. Cheers matey! :partyman: Bt my vote goes to "the guitarist who plays for himself", coz thtz the sole reason y us guitarists start out in the first place. Unless ur the one who, one day, saw some friend of urs w/ a guitar showing off like therez no end & attracting so many babes, that u got jealous & picked up the instrument since then!

isn't that why most of us picked up a guitar in the first place? haha. :)

i want to be the fat fuck who smokes and eat fast food every damn day... hmmm it sounds exactly like now..

I play for myself... :) In that I will not let the audience dictate my musical direction.

I will listen to comments from the audience and fellow players because I don't have all the ideas in the world.

And when I go on stage, I play for the audience.

But if I have to play something I do not like, just to make some cash, or to maintain my popularity, I will not.

I am thinking out loud here, but if a guitarist is playing for himself, does it not make him a LONER??

So if a guitarist is a loner, he won't be even able to join or stay in a band for long, given that kind of mentality.

This reference to an old tread on jamming kaki's. Bandmates always have this bitch on the guitarist who is doing his own thing all the time, so the band cannot progress. Worst still, the guitarist who go into the studio, and shred in his own world throughout the whole session, and goes like "look here, I am paying too what??!!".

Do you want to be that kind of guitarist??

So we can't even progress on to talk about his audience.

Is that what you mean poo??

hmmm... mikemann, I think you are talking abt an EGOTISTIC guitarist, who doesn't give a damn about what EVERYONE else thinks of his music, be it his bandmates, audience or family.

And like what you said, these guitarists never live long in a band. Very hard (Actually, impossible) to work with them outside of their boundaries.

But I wonder... What abt those guitarists/musicians who have a dream, a vision of what their music is to be, and thus cannot get along with their band mates?

I always had respect for people like these...

I think some take it the wrong way.."Playing for One's Self" doesn't mean playing "yourself" or by lonesome. It just means tht ur playing for ur own cause, playing bcoz u want to play, n coz u want to b bttr n best in what u do for ur own cause. It means u have a goal, the goal is set by u, n u try ur best to achieve it, nt bcoz u'd b famous when u do, bt bcoz u'd b happy for urself n b satisfied w/ ur ability. And SC thtz a question i'v always wanted to ask. What abt em? I'v seen such a person b4..& itz reli sad.

well.. there is alot to learn from playing genres you dislike actually...
but its perfectly alright to not play them completely - after all music is a passion and should not be patronised.

i guess in this case i would be playing for the audience. Its not an easy thing to please an audience... when the audience claps or when people come up to shake your hand telling you what a great show it was... that kinda satisfaction cant be bought. Tone wise id wish venus around singapore would offer better equipment... like P.A,Amps... better drumset... etc.. heck if i had the strength i would bring all my own shit. cus my home sound is still the best - i just cant play loud enuf!!!

If you have a vision like shred cow...its good too. like Vai and Satch all had visions like that..to do their own thing. if not they'd be world class sessionists and not world class virtuosos today.
