I sold my yamaha dtxpress 3 because i want to change or upgrade.
Im considering between the new yamaha dtxpress 4 special which is for $2,500 at luthermusic and the sound is great from what i heard from youtube.
Next is the pintech e-gig or escape.
Next is alesis dm5 pro.
Need your opinions on this.
If u know which site got the review post them here for me thanks.

tim098, i dont think that helps; besides, the td-20's insanely priced.

i'll do up a review for the alesis dm5 pro based on Rhythm mag's later when i get home.

for your budget, i'd actually recommend the roland td-3kw. i dont like the hihat (i like the DTXpress IV's hihat; it's only included, for roland kits, in the higher-end kits like td-10 and td-20) , but prefer roland's versatility and pads. i use a td-3kw, btw.

DM5 Pro

Rhythm Mag's Jordan McLachlan rated the DM5 Pro 4 out of 5 stars

His comments as follows:

"As far as pocket-friendly electronic set-ups are concerned, the DM5 Pro makes a very convincing argument. You have to make allowances for certain aspects of its specification - the fiddliness of set-up/tear-down, the modest abilities of the brain, the simple cymbal pads and so on - but as a sub-BP400 package there's really nothing terribly off-putting about it. The DM5 Pro certainly feels more sophistical than the standard DM5 and, particularly if you're after a home-friendly kit to work on your chops and try new things, it'll make for a great partner."

My own break-down of the DM5 Pro.

Rack: From the pictures I've seen, it looks pretty sturdy and is almost similar to roland's. vast improvement from the DM5.

Pads: Yup, they might look like mesh heads, but they're not. In fact, they're plastic heads. And I quote, "The feel of the pads under the stick is very positive and a little less 'boingy' than some affordable mesh heads tend to be ..... But I like the tactility of the pads." Furthermore, 4 lugs enable the heads to be tensioned to your liking.

Module: 21 Kits, Over 500-odd sounds. Sounds more than decent for that price range to me. It might not provide you with the more realistic sounds you would hear from a roland/yamaha, but it does just fine a job for you, especially since it's for home practice.

sounds pretty good for a e-kit that cost a tad over a thousand buckeroos.

not too sure about pintech, but the pintech escape shouldnt be a problem since it uses a td-3 module, which is the same one used for a roland td-3kw kit. however the pintech Egig uses a pintech module which i know nothing about so cant really help you there.

If i were you, i'd get the DM5 Pro, then maybe upgrade it a little with say 2 more pads? a cymbal and tom pad.

just my 0.02, hope it does help a little.

he stated a budget? haha but yes i do agree that the td-20 is INSANELY priced. freaking 8k. and i heard from the swee lee staff that the module alone is like 6k. daaamn..
Well, thread starter u should check out all the roland v-drums. the 4k one to me is pretty decent, but expensive lah. theres a 2k one which i think is the best for its price compared to yamaha and the rest

he didnt state a budget, but from the list i'd say his budget is $2.5k thereabouts.

the 2k roland one you're talking about is the td-3kw. quite a superb kit, dont like the hihat though. that's what most people complain about.

rolands are way expensive, but a worthwhile investment IF you've got the dough.

Yeah,my budget is around $2500,not more.
Plus im still saving up,a long way to go.
For above $2000 the roland td3 comes with a mesh head snare pad but the rest is rubber much like the yamaha's while for the same price i can get pintech escape which comes with the same td 3 module and with mesh pads.

oh oh and i also thought of getting the roland hd-1 then upgrade when i save up.The roland hd-1 looks attractive, small and cute.haha.
Who got the hd-1?care to comment on it?

swee lee quoted me $1k+ for TD-3 module alone.. thats way more insane than $6k for TD-20!!

the important thing about e drums is the module. pads are much easier and cheaper to upgrade, if you are looking at expanding then make sure that the module leaves you with options for expansion. i have not played the HD-1 but it seems pretty basic, i doubt you would be satisfied with it if you upgraded to kick ass pads with the HD-1 module. yamaha e drums seem pretty decent, you won't go wrong with it but i must say that rolands are the way to go, e drums wise..

oh yeah btw i own a TD-3 but i'm using mesh head and triggers with it. i agree with jeepers about the TD-3 HH. the FD-8 HH controller seems to be source of the problem, weird that it works well with all other roland modules EXCEPT TD-3. btw does anyone know if swee lee brings in TD-9? the module looks pretty cool.
