Hi fellow softies, my pickup switch makes a popping sound (from the amp obviously) whenever i switch from neck to both and bridge pickup... does spraying contact cleaner solve the problem rather then changing the switch?

Where do i spray it? right into the hole of the switch from the outside of the guitar or do i need to dismantle the guitar back and spray from within? how much to spray? can i plug in to amp straight after spraying contact cleaner and play my guitar?

for scratchy volume/tone knobs (for future so i don't have to ask here again) where should i spray? Also any recommended brand of contact cleaner to buy?

sorry for so much qustion.

as the name of the contact cleaner, you spray at the area where theres metal part that come into contact.

for the popping sound from pickup switch, sometime it aint problem with the switch, but due to different output level of the pickup, when switching, this different in level of output will cause the slight popping.

How much to spray, comman sense, as long you dont flood the thing with it. And in real world, a slight spray of it will do. Aterall, we just wanna get rid of dust particle and not big chunk of gooo.

for pots, its the same as switches, you use contact cleaner on the area of the pot where theres contact, aka the innard of the pot where the wiper meet the carbon ring. Again, dont have to spray much, just slight one will do.

lastly, contact cleaner is alcohol based. It will evaporate fast. Just dont flood whatever you are spraying, you be fine.

Different switches are made differently.

So the contact points might be different.
We might not be able to guide you as to
where to spray your contact cleaner.

But as the name suggest, you are suppose
to spray the contact cleaner at the points
that contact each other, then flick the switch
repeatedly to dislodge/clean any dirt/oxidation
that has built up.

So yes, it'll be best if you can open up the guitar
and spray at the innards directly.

The same with pots, you are suppose to spray
INTO the pot, not AT the shaft, nor AT the solder pads.
Spray into the pot, the part where you can see the
wiper contact the carbon traces. And then repeatedly
roll the pot shaft forwards and backwards to clean it.
