Say man, I tot this place is a goner?
"considering you could avoid the use of the
end pins by having smaller bores through the brass plate..."
Are you talking abt bridge pins ?
Any way, I'd been working on it some times ago.
Got some brass strips 1.0 x 9.0 mm wide (I know, too narrow 12 mm or more would be better)
drilled 5.0 mm (4.5 dia is better) thru off-centered abt 1.0 mm to accomadate the ball ends.
a made a few to accommodate strings spacing at bridge
2 1/8" =53.98 mm and
2 3/16"=56.56 mm
So I use 55 mm 1st to 6th & an easy pitching of 11 mm each.
Still crossing my fingers and hop it can accommodates both strings spacing at bridge.
Thought of cutting a small V at both end of the strip n bent it upwards so that it will pierce into the bridge plate during mounting/restringing, but drop the idea but use double side tape instead.
Will do it when my next guitar needs a string change. Can wait to 'hear' the result.
Anyway I did not slot one side of the holes because none of my guitars have slotted bridge.

Sori for the pic, can't delete some
