Where to get mesa amps

Yup low volume wun hurt the speakers that's for sure, and dun worry even if u abuse them once or twice ur speakers wun go kapput straight away (lol even so it is not advisable imo). Just try to get matching speakers as much as possible.

i think it's best to play safe with little watt difference. If not it will under-utilize the amp too. Anyway, im going to check out the sale at blackwood tml. Cya around if anyone is going :)

It's actually not very clear cut. Unless you have ways to actually measure the amount of wattage put out by your amp at a particular volume level, it's hard to say whether it's safe or not. Also, the matching is by RMS, meaning output power in linear operation, i.e. No Distortion. When a tube amp distorts, it generates even more watts. So, not so simple, lah.

It's like the impedance thingy, a slight mismatch is probably still ok. Just dun go to extremes.

If a tube amp generates mroe power when it distorts, and the triple recto is usually used for it's high gain modern channel... Won't it blow an amp of a lower wattage easily?

I dun know for sure. Perhaps most of the distortion is generated at the preamp stage. The increase in power output when the power tubes are distorted is not like multiples more. Just slightly more. Also, the speaker may be spec'd at 90 watts but may be able to handle more. The Lonestar, for example, the 100 watt amp is paired with a C90 speaker. So, it depends.

eBay works

I recently bought a Boogie Stiletto Deuce head (second-hand) from an eBay dealer. There are some very reputable and solid guys who have set up their entire business distribution on eBay so they are already equipped to handle foreign transactions, paypal, shipping, etc.

Some of these guys may be able to get you brand new, though nobody is supposed to export US models to Singapore (to protect Bentley). With enough due diligence you will be able to buy safely.

Call them. Talk to the guy. They will appreciate speaking to a genuine buyer. It helps build confidence - remember they've been ripped off by dodgy buyers in Asia too many times before - so things will go smoother if you make contact.

Shipping is going to run you about $300-400 USD. Customs is going to charge you GST. But do the math - you're going to end up with a Boogie for about a third of the price (and hassle) of going through Bentley.

There is a lot of crap on the net too though. Don't buy someone else's nightmare. Avoid the obviously cheap and 'sold as is' stuff.

Of course, if it's from the USA it will be 110v - I have a step down transformer from SimLim that works fine.

If you gig a lot and dragging a step down transformer bugs you, depending what model you want, and how handy you are with electronics, you can check out Mercury Magentics on the web - they have lots of Power Transformer options - you can probably get a 230v PT with the right power taps for your model.

One last thing - budget another say, $200 for a complete re-tube. You wont know the condition of the tubes if you buy second hand. There's a difference between 'working' and 'singing'. I would recommend contacting Doug at www.dougstubes.com by email. Let him know your model, and what style or tone you are after. He'll put together a package of tubes for each stage of your amp. I just re-tubed the Stiletto, and man, it is SINGING.

I called Boogie last year and had a very loud one-way discussion with their VP of sales. He is clueless. Utterly Clueless. I spoke to Bentley as well. Forget them gents. Use the internet.

Hmmm... don't ebay have some protection thingy for the buyers and sellers now? Overseas calls cost a lot so I may not want to call the guy I'm buying from lol

uh, do the math... you're going to save thousands of dollars... a call to make sure the deal goes smooth is not going to break you.

The issue you need to understand is, when an American guy selling a US$2000 amp gets a message from Singapore, the first thing he thinks is "great - another scammer trying to rip me off."

The sad reality is, there's a lot of unscrupulous people in the world, and eBay, credit cards and paypal are tools they use. Calling is a wise idea. It helps the seller to understand you are genuinely interested. Believe me, you're going to find 5 amps you want to buy, and 4 of the sellers will say NO to you just because you live in Singapore. You may have to fax a copy of your IC, credit card, or maybe do an expensive bank draft if he doesn't believe in you.

What does a Boogie Mark V head cost from Bentley in KL? Over 14,000 MYR right? That's about SGD$5,800+ or US$4,110+
A Mark V head (new) in the USA is US$2000. (S$2800)
Shipping will cost you max $400 ~ (S$ 560)
Duty at ICA in Singapore will run you a few hundred ~ (S$ 400)
A step down transformer from Sim Lim, $100 (S$ 100)

total of $3,860max against S$5,800. You're gonna save $2k.
And you need to import the amp into Singapore and pay GST and transport costs on top of that $5,800. And what is Bentley going to do for after sale service for you? They're in another country!!! You're donating $2k to them for nothing.

The eBay protection also needs to be understood. For items above a certain value, the SELLER does not receive the funds immediately. The sale has to be completed (delivered and signed off by the buyer) so it could be months before the seller gets your money. Yeah, this appears to protect YOU the buyer, but guess what? This makes USA based sellers much LESS likely to want to do business with you.

I also want to tell you what else happens. You make awesome contacts. I don't want to name drop here, but I've now got direct access to some manufacturers and designers simply because I called and took the time to get to know them. Call at 6am when it is the afternoon in the USA. Best time to catch them. I've got free Tshirts, exclusive first-refusal offers, Autographed Overdrive pedal, immediate tech support, a replacement power supply fedex'd for free in 36 hours(!), and even invitations to go fishing with a top producer in Nashville - all from people I've never met, only talked to on the phone.

Make the call brother...

Did you go to an ebay shop or an individual who was attempting to sell his amp?

Robboster - I got my Stiletto from a seller called "the_gear_geeks". Dude's name is Chris. He's an eBay power seller with a 100% rating. Chris and his partner actively hunt for used music gear to sell on eBay.

I check in with him regularly as I am hunting for a Lone Star head and would happily do business with him again.

I suggest you buy straight from mesa official dealer. I bought my mesa amp from musicpower.com. Reliable, safe and very very helpful. Musicpower won Best National online guitar store and Mesa Boogie mark of excellence awards in NAMM 2010. They are the first online store to sell mesa officially. You dont have to call them. Just add to cart and check out using paypal. It has been a pleasant experience buying frm them. Perfect packed and safely delivered to me. Everything is in brand new condition and nothing that im unhappy about.

They dont ship mesa outside usa but u can use forwarding services like borderlinx and vpost to fly your amp to singapore.

Hope this helps.
