Hi guys I've heard that EMG pick ups are really really good and I would want to buy them to replace my current pickups. Are EMGs available for sale anywhere besides Davisguitar ?

EMGs are available in davis only I think, and the only good alternative imo (for actives) are the seymour duncan blackouts, which are also only available at davis. so yeah guess you'll have to go down to davis >_<

you should try them out first and also be wary that they are active pickups.
alternatively, buy them off Soft!

oh wait, what's the difference between active and passive pickups besides using batteries? Pls excuse me for my noobness

well.. only davis has it... I've got a set of 81 and 89 on either the bridge or neck...

i think amplifier plays apart on it.. cos now im having so treblish sounds.. not like what i expected like Metallica's sound... i was so disappointed...

and now im working to get a new effect... maybe one of the reasons that i couldnt get a very solid sound...

if memory serves me right.. change of both.. around $360...

my part of the story...

I forget all the technical terms but here's how it works..
Active: The manget or wires or something is extremely sensitive however it produces a sickeningly weak signal.. so you have your battery to boost it up.. As a result you get extremely sensitive signal (eg.light touch on the string probably creates some sounds..)
Good for particular kind of music.. not good for others..
(This part im not certain but heard that some active also got pre-amp.. mean it's like a kind of signal modification =D.. That's why when you do clean on EMG85 it sounds like distortion LoL, again let the pros describe this thing..)
Passive: Normal stuff no need battery =D

I may be wrong but as far as I know, only Davis carries EMG Pickups. Or rather at least Davis is the only authorised dealers in Singapore for EMGs. I recommend the EMG 81 & i'm lazy to write so I'll just copy and paste its descriptions.

"The EMG-81 is a high output pickup designed especially for the lead guitarist. The 81 is at its best for high volume overdrive and amps with a master volume. Whether you're playing power rock and roll, or overdriving your amp, there's a razor sharp attack, and incredible sustain for brilliant soloing."

Allternatively, popular combinations are EMG 81 with EMG 85, like Kerry King or Zakk Wylde. The 85 is well to maintain a beefy lowend and a fatter top end. Because of a more natural tone, it works great as a rhythm and blues pickup because it has loads of output but isn't muddy.

2 EMG 81's costs around $270+/-, 81.85 combo's however, are cheaper by $10 - $20. However, as Klazick says, a good amp plays a definitive role. Having EMG's or DiMarzio® D Activator™ aren't gonna make any difference if you using a thrashy 10 watt amp. So don't forget to invest on a good amp too.
