What's your bet on Telecasters.

nebo: old school config actually has humbuckers too, check out some reissues like the 72RI.

Shredcow: Damn fierce your statement to my beliefs hahaha.

Anyway, personally i find that the vintage designs are better. No love for the modern strats with 2 point bridge. A white/sunburst strat is a must buy for me in 2006 :D

On the contrary, i like the feel of a chunkier neck for chordwork and stuffs like blues/funk. After playing with my RG for 2 years, it always induce fatigue when doing rhythm stuffs. As for headstocks...i only like the pre CBS smaller ones. Though the neck heel is something that i agree too...wonder if i could buff away some like how Steve Morse did for his EBMM

im of like mind with edo regarding the vintage instruments, im pretty much a vintage-*beep* thru and thru. for teles, i kinda prefer the MIJ reissues, with the 'ashtray' bridge, and the REALLY fat neck, with the nice rounder than usual radius. those features, imho, make chording on it a dream. the hand just wraps perfectly around the whole neck, and u can just go on and on, makes u wanna be a rhythym guitarist (ok, maybe thats exagerrating, but u get the point  )

also, on top of the rhythym-friendly features, the tone of a tele is very nice for strumming as well. er, im referring to the traditional pickup config, as in the tiny single coil and the slant single coil. no idea abt those teles which are humbucking.

(observations here are based on a mij '62-'65 reissue, so features will probably vary)

i used to dislike Fender- intense dislike...

however, along the way, i've leaned to adapt, it's an assessment of my playing capacity more than anything else- if one can adapt, there'll be more good wares to enjoy.

ok not to deviate too much...

U can C Jimmy Page play tele on How the West was won DVD.....amazing.

So many people have used one in music over the years.

2 bad it is not comfortable guitar to play but if someone give me a contoured Suhr TL, I think I will learn to like it more.

I like Teles, I feel that they are suited to rhythm stuff, and for solos the tone is full. I will add one to my collection eventually ;)

haha. i like the american 2 point bridge. it just feels smoother to me.

and hey, 22 frets! 21 frets ending at C# on standard tuning just feels... weird to me.

Well I love blues and country so the telecaster wins on those 2 counts...

I love Rolling Stones and the stuff that Keef does so that's another plus.

I'm playing a late 80's MIJ, and I use it to cover most other music other than blues (I already have my #1 for that). A lot of tones can be gotten by manipulating the tone and volume controls and of course shifting your picking hand, varying your picking strength etc. There are 5 way switch mods that can be done for different pickup sounds but I find that I'm quite satisfied with the 3 switch positions so far. More than enough for the palette.

In short, it's the kind of guitar that one learns to love. Some people miss the tonal variety of the Strat or the "chug chug" of humbuckers, but if you take the time to explore its tonal range you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Of course, this is assuming that you're not going to put it through a gazillion pedals/modellers and turn the tone into mush. It helps to have a good small tube amp that you can overdrive at friendly volumes. Tele's seems to love that best.

It was the first commercially produced solid-body electric guitar, and there's a good reason why it's still hanging around. Most important of all is to evaluate what kind of music you want it to do. It might not do death metal or shred, but you can pretty much squeeze everything else out of it.

Just my SGD$0.02.

Not sure if you guys have read this article in harmony central..

http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Articles/Avoiding_GAS/Part-5.html

Makes a good case for the Tele..

hahaha good one.
This is what I steal from that article:
"jazz virtuoso Mike Stern, country pickin' whiz Vince Gill, rock god Keith Richards, blues man Albert Collins, and modern-day troubadour Jakob Dylan have in common? They all play a Fender Telecaster"

One of my fav player, Joe Pass also used to play Telecaster.

i value the tele because it delivers my ideas, i wouldn't give a hoot if it doesn't. that's my advice for everyone out there- get something which is useful for you, avoid spending on something for its snob appeal per se.
