Whats the diff between COVERED and NON-COVERED pickups?

But there's one thing I don't buy about that article. The hum-cancelling thing about the covers. Why would the covers cancel the hum? If it's a humbucker, shouldn't the hum already be cancelled?

I think it affords better shielding. Don't think the term hum-cancelling should be used...

The chrome/gold plated nickle covers affect the magnetic fields. A plastic cover, or some non-magnetic cover, wouldn't do much to the tone but the nickle does.

That I know. But while I doubt this difference was intentional (or maybe it was) from the beginning, and knowing that it affects the tone (possibly in a negative manner to some), why didn't pickup manufacturers eventually use a non-magnetic cover if the cover was initially meant for cosmetic purposes?

Is it one of those "wow, that sounds cool now, lets keep it that way" ideas?

Shielding would affect hiss and noise. Not hum right? We also get hum wat. Like 50 cycle hum rather than 60 cycle, but it's still there. So the article was mis-worded?

It could be intentional - it does protect the humbucker and the thin wires.

Well... from what I read and stuff... Eric Clapton was one of the first to take off the cover and discover the new tone.

The covers do affect tone and ... well... if you want vintage PAF, i suppose you got to have a cover or its not going to work out that way.

And there are non-magnetic covers available nowadays...

That's what I know. But I never studied this. Interesting.

If the covers could cancel hum, I'd have a covered true-blue single coil please.

arsegras .. I think it shud be:

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE ...

wanted to use the quote button but got PMed for doing so ... hence this popst script .....

Yup

Yup, that is the effect. Sounds more nasally with the cover on.

I won't say that it reduces the "hum", cos I never had any hum
to begin with. But if I have to choose 1 word to replace hum, I'd
use "feedback"

But nonetheless, removing the nickel cover off my epiphone p-u
is like lifting a veil of a bride. Everything is so much clearer. Few
of my frens said its a little bright, but they still agree its a great
improvement in clarity, and you can just use the tone knob to
cut some of the brightness anyway. So its a fairly good trade off

Oh I'm only talking about cleans, for dist, its more or less same
sound, just that it'll feedback a lil easier if you're standing too
close to the speakers with your gain at max.
