whats a good stand alone smooth overdrive pedal

Bang for Buck? True Bypass?.. Barber Direct Drive ;)
Smooth & Rich & Good Amount of Gain

I love my SD1 as well.. but the buffer in there isn't the best..:)

Try a Hardwire CM-2 Tube Overdrive. Creams most of the competition which costs twice the price.

If you want smoother and cheaper, its "predecessor" the Digitech Bad Monkey is a good cheap alternative. However the CM-2's got more complex overtones and to me is a far better standalone pedal. Works great as a lead booster too.

i'd say get the OCD. i own a V3 and it's one versatile pedal that'll give you light breakup to all out distortion. not metal but it's more than enough for me. its transparent in LP mode and very sensitive to your dynamics. i really love it! gives you a marshall-type sound in HP mode. alters your tone quite a little. i havent tried it on 12V or 18V but there's supposed to be a world of difference. + V3 looks better than V4 IMO hahaha

I don't think a Timmy is a smooth overdrive actually... maybe it can sound smooth at the extreme end of its gain. Its closer to how the Catalinbread Silverkiss sounds, just a touch rounded/smoother.

i dunno, maybe the danelectro cool cat transparent overdrive? which is a clone of the timmy? check tgp / fsb for the thread and the scoop. haha. it's a more professional behringer.

edit: clone, as in really transistor for transistor resistor for resistor clone clone.

Not really...the TO is using a SMD TL072 opamp while the Timmy is using a 4559.

Other than that, pretty much identical :D

Ok la, also some cap values are different, but essentially it's the same. Haha. Dunch be so niao

The true diff is that the 99 dollar version has a long wait time and shipping costs involved. The danelectro can be gotten immediately.

i caught the thread on TGP, the difference btw the tim and the coll cat is the chip + 2 extra capacitors. has anyone tried the cool cat personally?

I don't know if its appropriate to say one efx sounds like another just because there are similar components used. Changing a cap value can reduce the amount of low end for example and that can translate into a crappy pedal to someone, and a useful tool for another person. Changing the chip can change the overdrive characteristics in various ways - small or big, up to the player. Even the true bypass argument cannot hold water for some people.

how do you define smooth? any songs in particular to refer to?

to me a smooth od is creamy without harsh highs.. sweet upper mids. Lovepedal Sunburst Eternity or G2D Creamtone comes to mind.

i would also include the dumble-ish pedals like the Menatone Howie or the Zendrive.. these are smooth but have the dumble-ish 'chirp' when you dig in

i had a Timmy.. i would consider it a bright, very transparent uncompressed fender blackface tube-amp-breakup kind of od.. wouldn't describe it as smooth.

wouldn't consider the usual TS9 or 808 exactly smooth as well.. they are a little harsh in the upper mids

to me, smooth is not transparent.

smooth od has its uses, transparent od has its uses.

its just like having different paintbrushes to paint with.
