i was wondering what kinda methods most of you use to mute unwanted string noise while playing. For me,i would use tons of palm mutings. could u all share ur muting techinques?
I tie a thin elastic hairband a the 1st fret right after the nut for that extra muting.
A rag will do or an old sock (as long as it doesnt smell hehehe)
Oh! I've seen the guitarists from The Human Abstract do that.
I mute unwanted strings with my palm as well, but always try to make it a habit to use left hand muting if what I'm playing is reachable. Depends on what I'm playing from time to time.
if im picking, i'd use my right pinky to mute the 1st/2nd string if im not playing them by like kinda holding on to the string a lil bit. i dont rly know how to explain.
& my palm will mute the others which im not playing.
if im strumming power chords on the 5th string, my middle finger of my left hand will mute the 6th string.
not sure if its the correct method. but its working well for me so far.
hahha
Usually both of my left n right hands mute the strings when i muting or playing the guitar. I follow Troy Stetina Technique rhythm metal guitar often n i found his way is quite good. You can also use your thumbs to mute the upper strings on the neck n for my picking hand my last finger will usually rest on the bridge when im palm muting so i dun make any unwanted noises
I palm-mute with the fleshy left side of my right hand. Generally, I use palm-muting whenever I am working with distortion, whether rhythm playing, soloing, etc. I always try to mute unplayed strings.
About tying something around the nut area... There's a video where James Murphy did a solo. It was 'Annihilation at the hands of God', Roadrunner United or something like that. He did just that. At first I thought it was some sort of capo but now I don't think so.
