what is " MIA and MIJ "

just wondering as well. are distortion pedals for electric guitar and basses the same? like can i use the same pedal for both instruments? thanks.

Haha yeah, but more often than not! I have a Big Muff that works supremely well for retaining low-end and giving me good low-end distortion. A little 'dirty 'for my liking though.

thanks all for the replies. realli helped alot.:)

im thinking of getting the bass starter pack from swee lee at $700 i think. any comments? like just to get myself started, as my budget is kinda tight as well.

hi nictan,

why not try look for second-hand basses instead on luther? i think it'll work work better for you in terms of budget.

hi. what do you mean by luther? the brand u mean? hmm. the bass starter pack in swee lee that i saw is squire by fender. getting it also spares me alot of trouble getting an amp and all u see. lol.

hi nic,

i think the trouble you go through sourcing for second-hand stuff can save you slight more cash, then once you've improved in your skill on the bass you can use the cash to get a better bass. =) ..

saves you from spending too much.

hi thanks. was thinking how about i get smthbrand new instead? trying to decide btwn the ibanez GSR200 GSR Series Bass Guitar or the GSR390 GSR Series Bass Guitar. price difference of abt 80-100 bucks. help? thanks

and is it true the GSR200 has one of the thinnest necks? thats wad i saw from one of the sites i browsed.

nictan: GSR series has thin necks, i had a gsr200 as my first bass. thin neck and well balanced body... no neck dive. makes it an easily playable bass

i think you are better off with a second hand bass. as you can see that is the advice that most bassists will give you about getting your first bass. for the same model it is cheaper. and like they say, you will probably change to a better bass when you get better. :D

but yes, ibanez necks are thinner than most and are really easy if you have smaller hands like me. get the 200, the bass boost is good for that extra punch.

yea but i dont realli know some of the basses out there so hard for me to get one second hand. dunno how to look out for stuff. may get 'conned' and buy the wrong one. and somemore it being my first bass, the feeling of buying smth brand new is much better hhahaahhaha.

hmm think i'll get the 200 since its not too bad and it aint that expensive. arnd 400-500? and yea i have real small hands. sad. that was wad attracted me to the 200 when i saw tt it had one of the thinnest necks. haha.

anw. thanks to all who helped in my thread. deeply appreciated. :)

hi nictan,

you could always get a more experienced friend to tag along when buying second hand stuff. Anyway, it's really up to you, the money is yours anyway. =P

GSR series are pretty decent for it's price range. Stable and delivers decent tone. Just that you've gotta be careful about the necks, GSR are made in indonesia and i've some bad experiences with indonesian-made necks ...

so please check, especially for warpage and stuff, honestly, bring someone more experienced along, even in these music shops, if you don't know how to check, you can be conned too.

it just means the necks may "bend" after some time, causing intonation problems as well as a higher action (the increased height between the strings and the neck).

Hey nictan,

I started out with a second hand bass too.. no point getting something too expensive.. once you've decided on what you want in a bass then do more research!

Good luck anyway.

TGM singaporean meh?? ...
i'll be quite ashamed to have it called a singapore made product ..

I asked one shop about TGM and they said it's made in China, sold in Singapore.

edit: OOT: anyone knows why the quotes are broken?
