What is meant by "Pro" guitarist/bassist/drummer etc.?

Pro?

for me i will call he/she a pro due to this citeria:

Guitarist/Bassist-who is blind
-who has one arm
-who has one 2 finger on his/her hand
if he or she have those citeria and can play the guitar well ..then he/she is a pro

Drummer-who is no arms

Or even better, sponsored and endorsed. Gibson sponsors quite a number of musicians here in Singapore, but there're no endorsements yet as far as I've heard.
About gibson sponsoring equipment...here's how it goes. Anyone can get that sponsor. But the catch is, you must use Gibson guitar for example all your shows. The guitars are not given but loan. Like that not considered sponsor to me that's why I turn down that crap. The office is somewhere in Kallang for those who got Gibson 'sponsor'. Hehehehehe!! I'd rather use my cheap guitars that I own rather than getting 'sponsored'. Unless, they give me a guitar, I'd say that as sponsorship.

Moreover, Gibson guitars are not as good as it used to. Well, it's just my opinion. Epiphone sounded better than the real gibby. But, at the end of the day...preference are just personal. So, I still prefer to play my cheap guitars that I own. I'm not worried if I should break it or whatever. If got Gibson 'sponsor' later kena pay if damage. Hehehehehe!!

example of 'pro' musician:

Q: "so, where did you meet XXXX?"

A: "she came to our last gig. we hooked up afterwards"

THAT'S QUITE PRO IN MY BOOK

Right and wrong. Let me verify and refute some facts from assumptions.

Anyone can be "supported by gibson" but new bands will only get epiphones...not gibsons. And yes you have to use the gibson at your show (at least for one song if you bring another guitar). while most local artistes here are given guitars as a "loan", there are a rare few here that are actually sponsored and endorsed. E.g Rosli Mansor and SK from the band Peepshow, they get guitars from Valley Arts and Gibson respectively and even get to keep them without a specified loan period. I know SK personally and from what I know he just received his third guitar from Gibson. Most bands who loan Gibsons are only allowed to have one at any single time.

Ibanez is a different story though. From what I can gather, Addy is the only Ibanez endorsee in Singapore and he is also sponsored and endorsed with even a signature model. I find this quite kewl cos almost every other guy here in sg owns one. Shows that Ibanez is quite strict with who they choose to endorse and they give their support all the way, unlike Gibson who merely "supports".

The term "pro" in popular culture is derived from that which is a short form for "professional". As stated, "professional" directly refers to the status of being active in a profession. Hence, "pro" is technically somebody who makes a living off of a certain field of profession.

However, popular uses of the term more commonly refer to one who is relatively skilled in any subject, be it a profession or an art form - or even something as trivial as coin-flipping.

this surely enlightens me. i used to think that gibson only 'sponsor' those who were talented. i used to go "wah gibson sponser. must have some standard"
guess i was wrong all these while...

every other tom and harry band is so-called "sponsored" by Gibson these days. but there are really some who are sponsored and actually get to keep the guitars. And some bands are merely sponsored by Gibson but have no choice but to use the cheaper Epiphones.

But of course, your band must have at least some gigging experiences and recordings to show for before any of this can take place. So some effort is still required. I wouldnt use the word "talent" here cos that is subjective.
